Funeral services for Marilyn Denise “M.D.” Davis were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, 2018, in New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Welsh.

Visitation was held from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, in the church.

Burial was in Eastridge Cemetery in Welsh under the direction of Fondel Memorial Chapel.

Marilyn Denise “M.D.” Davis was born on Dec. 2, 1956, in Monroe to the late Mary Louise Pitre and the late Arnold Davis. She attended Bethune High School until desegregation, then she transferred to Welsh High School, where she graduated in 1974.

Lake Arthur pitcher Peyton Thibodeaux earned a huge win on the mound for the Tigers Tuesday night when his club topped Welsh 4-3. Thibodeaux fired a complete game 7 innings and gave up only 3 runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts.

US rig count decreases to 993

HOUSTON (AP) — The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in the U.S. decreased by two this week to 993. That exceeds the 824 rigs that were active this time a year ago.

Houston oilfield services company Baker Hughes reported Thursday that 797 rigs drilled for oil this week and 194 for gas. Two were listed as miscellaneous.

Atlanta, Philadelphia set 25-man rosters

Atlanta and Philadelphia set their 25-man rosters ahead of opening day at SunTrust Park.

The Braves got down to the limit by placing four players on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26. They include third basemam Johan Camargo (right oblique muscle strain), left-handed pitcher Luiz Gohara (left ankle sprain) and right-hander Chase Whitley (right heel infection).

Left-hander Jacob Lindgren, who is recovering from elbow surgery, also went on the DL.

Norman Alden Briggs, age 92 and a lifelong resident of Jennings, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2018, in American Legion Hospital after battling congestive heart failure.

Born Nov. 24, 1925, to L.W. and Cecile Matherne Briggs, he graduated from Jennings High and entered the Army at age 18.

Iowa man charged with indecent behavior with stepdaughter

An Iowa man was arrested Thursday by deputies of the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDPSO) for allegedly inappropriately touching his stepdaughter.

Roger Flores II, 30, of Iowa, was arrested and charged with felony indecent behavior with a juvenile.

In June 2017 detectives of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office learned of an 11-yearold victim who told investigators that she was inappropriately touched by her stepfather. When it was found that the abuse occurred in Jeff Davis Parish the case was moved to JDPSO, Chief Deputy Chris Ivey said.

State’s hunting and fishing license overhaul wins support

BATON ROUGE (AP) — An overhaul of Louisiana’s recreational hunting and fishing licensing system that would pull more money out of some people’s pockets edged forward Wednesday in the Legislature.

With a 12-3 vote, the House natural resources committee sent the 40-page bill to the House floor for debate.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is pushing the licensing redesign as a regulatory streamlining initiative. The 117 recreational hunting and fishing licenses currently offered would drop to 39.

Justin Verlander wasn’t simply a late-season rental. He was under contract with the team for two more seasons. Bregman’s reaction, caught on a teammate’s Instagram Live account, was one of pure joy, filled with shrieks and yelling.

Francis Celebrates Retirement

Ida Nell Francis celebrated her retirement, after 42 years of service, from the City of Jennings recently. Francis worked in the Water Revenue Department and served 10 mayors. Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn and city employees thanked her for the many years of service and wished her the best in future endeavors.
