Lacassine students, faculty recognized during annual awards banquet

Thursday, March 16, Jeff Davis Parish School System held its annual awards banquet.

Kinzie Brassell was honored on March 15 at a Jefferson Davis Parish awards banquet for being chosen the 2017-2018 Elementary Jeff Davis Parish Student of the Year. She is 11 years old and a fifth grade student at Lacassine High School. She is the daughter of Johnnie and Mattie Brassell of Iowa.

An Easter memory: ‘My child would never do that ...’

Twenty years ago, when both children were enthusiastic about hunting Easter eggs, I dressed them in matching Kelly Kids outfits with their names embroidered above bunny motifs.

I have to say, they were precious in blue-andwhite seersucker with ribbon bedecked Easter baskets

Of course, the daughter stayed precious longer, able to scour the hills and dales for eggs without looking like a chicken farmer.

Lady Eagles claim 18-17 victory over CHEF

JENNINGS – Gabriella Savant didn’t see many strikes Monday during the Bethel Lady Eagles showdown with CHEF.

In fact, Savant walked three times and was hit by a pitch three more times.

But the three-hole hitter didn’t have square up a pitch to have a direct affect on the game.

Savant, who scored five runs, stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and two outs in a tie game (17-17) and was hit by a pitch to give the Lady Eagles an 18-17 victory.

Control issues plagued both teams the entire game.

LSU finishes season in NIT Second Round

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Utes scored 30 first quarter points, hitting 12-of-17 field goals that propelled the Utes to a 95-71 win over LSU in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament at the Jon Huntsman Center Monday night.

Utah, 20-11, will meet the winner of the St. Mary’s-Washington game on Wednesday night for the right to go to the NIT semifinals in New York City.

LSU concludes its first season under Coach Will Wade with an 18-15 record as he became the second rookie coach at LSU to take a team to post-season play in school history.

Alliance of American Football to kick off after Super Bowl

Pro football — actual games — won’t disappear from TV screens, mobile devices and the American consciousness once the Super Bowl ends next February.

The Alliance of American Football will kick off the following Sunday. On network television (CBS) as well as through a multitude of free digital platforms.

JENNINGS - If Jennings’ Kole Myers didn’t leave a lasting impression on Fairview Thursday in the first of two meetings between the two teams, he most definitely did one day later when they closed out their twogame series at Jennings High School. Myers, who went 1-for-3 with a triple on Thursday, was an impossible out for the Panthers Friday evening when he went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to help lead the Bulldogs to a 13-4 victory over the Panthers. Myers was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle after logging two triples, a double and a single in the victory.

Spring has officially sprung. Flowers planted at Founders Park in Jennings are greeting the new season with blooms in a myriad of different colors.

Man charged with molestation

Three local people were arrested in separate cases recently for charges including molestation and cruelty to a juvenile.

A Jennings man was arrested Friday for allegedly molesting one or possibly more of the children in his care.

Donnie Guillory, 38, was arrested and charged with sexual battery and molestation of a juvenile after his 13-year-old stepdaughter alleged that he had been molesting her since the age of six, Jennings Police Detective Richard Geiger said.

Tigers sweep twin bill at Bell City Tourney

BELL CITY – The Lake Arthur Tigers moved their record to 8-3 on the diamond over the weekend by sweeping a pair of games at the Bell City High School Baseball Tournament. The Tigers pounded Reeves High School in their first game Saturday morning before taking down Division V power Northside Christian 7-3 in their final game of the tournament. Lake Arthur played a noon-district tilt at home against DeQuincy Monday before opening district 6-2A play Thursday on the road at Ville Platte High School.
