Trump opioid plan includes death penalty for traffickers

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s plan to combat opioid drug addiction calls for stiffer penalties for drug traffickers, including the death penalty where appropriate under current law, a top administration official said. It’s a fate for drug dealers that Trump has been highlighting publicly in recent weeks.

Four injured when trains collide, derail in Kentucky

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) — Two freight trains collided and derailed shortly before midnight, injuring four people and igniting a fire that forced nearby residents to evacuate, authorities said Monday.

Nearby residents were evacuated “out of an abundance of caution after the crash was reported at 11:14 p.m., Lexington Fire Lt. Jessica Bowman told The Associated Press. Bowman said she couldn’t confirm what substance had spilled and was burning, but the people were allowed to return home once safety risks were ruled out.

Fed set to raise rates as Powell gives 1st news conference

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve’s first meeting under Jerome Powell’s leadership will likely end Wednesday with an announcement that the Fed will resume its modest interest rate hikes.

But investors will be most attuned to what Powell signals at his first news conference about whether and how he might steer the Fed’s policymaking differently from his predecessor, Janet Yellen. Will he, for example, be inclined to step up the pace of Fed rate hikes?

Austin likely facing ‘serial bomber,’ police chief says

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Fear escalated across Austin on Monday after the fourth bombing this month — this time, a blast that was triggered by a tripwire and demonstrated what police said was a “higher level of sophistication” than the package bombs used in the previous attacks.

Two men in their 20s were wounded Sunday night as they walked along a street and were hospitalized in stable condition. The three earlier bombings since March 2 left two people dead and two wounded.

It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Lonnie A. Dailey announces his passing from this life on March 15, 2018 at the age of 83.

Funeral services will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings on Saturday, March 17, 2018, at 10 a.m., with Reverend Clifton LeJeune officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home beginning on Friday, March 16, from 4-8 p.m. Visitation will resume on Saturday, March 17, from 8 a.m. until the time of his service at 10 a.m.

It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Evelyn Richard McFarlain of Jennings announces her passing from this life on March 16, 2018 at the age of 79.

Funeral services for Evelyn will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at 11 a.m., with Reverend James Townley officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home beginning on Monday, March19, 2018, from 2:30-10 p.m. Visitation will resume on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, from 9 a.m. until the time of her service at 11 a.m.

ROCKY the rooster

James Ward Elementary’s official school mascot is the bulldog, but a different animal has been making a name for itself at the school.

Rocky the rooster, who has taken up residence on the school grounds, has been adopted by the school with open arms.

Brynn Perrin, a speech therapist for at the school, said the rooster showed up after Mardi Gras and never left.

“We would see him outside walking up and down the street and then eventually he made his way onto the school grounds,” she said. “Over the weekends he’d stay and on Monday morning, he’d still be there.”
