State urging digging safety

Governor John Bel Edwards has proclaimed the month of April as Safe Digging Month in Louisiana as part of a nationwide safety awareness campaign to draw attention to the thousands of miles of buried infrastructure throughout our state and the importance of safe excavation. It is extremely important that everyone dial 811 before they dig so that operators of underground utilities and pipelines can mark the location of buried lines to make them easier to avoid.

The Jeff Davis Title I Parent Center completed its family literary reading program at Jennings Elementary School. The program, Prime Time Family Reading Time, targets children aged 6-10 and their parents in an effort to foster a lifelong love of learning through reading.

Budget, summer event top Welsh meeting agenda

WELSH – At a special budget meeting held here Tuesday, the board of aldermen discussed allocating money to purchase new equipment and hosting a new summer event.

The meeting was the town’s second special budget meeting. The meetings have been designed for the board to discuss possible spending in the upcoming fiscal year before finalizing the budget scheduled to take effect July 1.

The organization does this through their LAES Student of the Month awards.

JENNINGS - After a rough series against Iowa last week, the Jennings Bulldogs took out their frustrations Monday in a District 4-3A doubleheader against Washington -Marion at Bulldog Diamond

Jennings (10-6, 2-2) banged out 30 hits, including 10 for extra bases, in a pair of run-rule victories over the visiting Charging Indians.

The Bulldogs exploded for 13 hits in the first game, taking the opener 19-1 in four innings and the second, 11-1.

Linda Brown, central figure in school segregation case, dies

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — As a girl in Kansas, Linda Brown’s father tried to enroll her in an all-white school in Topeka. He and several black families were turned away, sparking the Brown v. Board of Education case that challenged segregation in public schools.

A 1954 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court followed, striking down racial segregation in schools and cementing Linda Brown’s place in history as a central figure in the landmark case.

Water park official jailed in connection to waterslide death

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A water park company’s coowner was being held in a Texas jail on murder and other charges Tuesday in connection to a Kansas criminal case in the death of a 10-year-old boy on what was promoted as the world’s largest waterslide.

Jail records show that Jeffrey Henry, the 62-year-old co-owner of Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts, was booked into the jail in Cameron County, Texas, on three charges: murder, aggravated battery and aggravated child endangerment.

Tigers win JDP showdown over Hounds

LAKE ARTHUR – Facing a 3-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lake Arthur Tigers seemed as though they may drop another close ball game to their rivals from Jeff Davis Parish in the Welsh Greyhounds. However, the Tigers made history by popping across 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 4-3 win and earn their first ever victory over a Top-5 team. The Hounds came in as the No. 2 ranked team in Class 2A.

JHS Tennis Team volunteers for Wheelchair Tournament

On Friday, 16 players of the Jennings tennis team traveled to Baton Rouge for the second year in a row to help volunteer as ball boys and ball girls in the 29th annual Cajun Classic Wheelchair Tennis Tournament (CCWTT).

The CCWTT is sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is one of only two Super Series tournaments, which is one level under a Grand Slam, in the United States and one of only six Super Series worldwide. It features top professional and amateur players in the world.
