Tigers win JDP showdown over Hounds

LAKE ARTHUR – Facing a 3-1 deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lake Arthur Tigers seemed as though they may drop another close ball game to their rivals from Jeff Davis Parish in the Welsh Greyhounds. However, the Tigers made history by popping across 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 4-3 win and earn their first ever victory over a Top-5 team. The Hounds came in as the No. 2 ranked team in Class 2A.

Water park official jailed in connection to waterslide death

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A water park company’s coowner was being held in a Texas jail on murder and other charges Tuesday in connection to a Kansas criminal case in the death of a 10-year-old boy on what was promoted as the world’s largest waterslide.

Jail records show that Jeffrey Henry, the 62-year-old co-owner of Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts, was booked into the jail in Cameron County, Texas, on three charges: murder, aggravated battery and aggravated child endangerment.

Linda Brown, central figure in school segregation case, dies

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — As a girl in Kansas, Linda Brown’s father tried to enroll her in an all-white school in Topeka. He and several black families were turned away, sparking the Brown v. Board of Education case that challenged segregation in public schools.

A 1954 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court followed, striking down racial segregation in schools and cementing Linda Brown’s place in history as a central figure in the landmark case.

South Texas WWII veteran honored with Quilt of Valor

MCALLEN, Texas (AP) — Surrounded by family, friends and fellow patriots at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2369, Valentin Hernandez was recently recognized with what’s become an endearing honor for veterans.

The Monitor reports the 97-yearold World War II veteran from Edinburg was given a Quilt of Valor — a handcrafted quilt made by volunteers and bestowed to American veterans — for his service in the U.S. military.

Funeral services will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at 2:30 p.m., with Father Bill Miller officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home beginning on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, from 2:30-8 p.m., and will resume on Wednesday, March 28, from 10 a.m. until the time of his service at 2:30 p.m.

It’s with great sadness and heavy hearts that the family of Amelia Lola Levy announces her passing from this life on March 26, 2018, at the age of 86.

Funeral services will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Jennings on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at 10 a.m.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 28, from 3:30-8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday, March 29, from 8 a.m. until the time of her service at 10 a.m.

Amelia will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.

Funeral service for Lee Allison “Qweet” Bias, 63, will be announced by Semien-Lewis Mortuary of Jennings. Mr. Bias entered into eternal rest in Jennings.

California county considers fighting state’s sanctuary law

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Leaders of Orange County, California, planned Tuesday to consider fighting a state law aimed at protecting immigrants from stepped-up deportations under the Trump administration.

The backlash to the state’s so-called sanctuary law comes a week after the small city of Los Alamitos in Orange County voted to opt out of the policy.

Retired justice urges repeal of Second Amendment

WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens is calling for the repeal of the Second Amendment to allow for significant gun control legislation.

The 97-year-old Stevens says in an essay on The New York Times website that repeal would weaken the National Rifle Association’s ability to “block constructive gun control legislation.”
