Deadlines set for October livestock show

Deadlines for 4-H members and FFA members of Jeff Davis Parish who wish to enter into the State Fair of Louisiana Livestock Validations in October are coming up in two weeks.

Amy Welch, livestock agent for Jeff Davis Parish 4-H, said the dates are early each year because registering livestock is a multi-step process.

US stocks edge higher adding to big prior-day gains

U.S. stocks edged higher in early trading Tuesday, adding to big gains from a day earlier. Gains by technology and energy companies outweighed losses in health care and industrial stocks. Investors had their eye on the latest company earnings and deal news.

New system to affect hunting, fishing licenses

Sportsmen in Louisiana must purchase their licenses online from now until Monday, April 1, because the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is currently attempting to transition to a new recreational hunting and fishing license sales system.

Rec complex to enforce ban on shelled foods

LAKE ARTHUR - A small sacrifice must now be made by those who attend events at the Lake Arthur Recreation Department’s baseball and softball complex.

Their ban on shelled foods, namely sunflower seeds and peanuts, will begin to be seriously enforced, Mikka Guidry, the recreation director said. These products are preventing water drainage from working properly.

Hathaway High School’s FFA students hosted its annual Aggie Day Saturday, complete with animals, food and fun.

Buller to fill remainder of term

Voters in Jeff Davis School Dist. 10 chose Vickie Buller to fill the remainder of the term that was vacated when her husband David Buller passed away last year on Sept. 6.

A total of 201 voters in Dist. 10 took to the polls between early voting and Saturday’s election. Vickie Buller took 152 votes, or 76 percent of total votes, over challenger James Edward Tarver’s 49 votes, or 24 percent of the total votes.

Audit: LA in good financial standing

Official reports note several errors

LAKE ARTHUR - The town here had several findings, or errors, in its most recent audit for the fiscal year 2016-2017, according to official reports released by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor (LLA).

The audit, which covers the financial year between June 30, 2016 and July 1, 2017, was prepared by an independent certified public accountant agency shows that the town has a strong financial outlook but that officials are in noncompliance with several state mandates.

Lady Tigers sweep pair at Bell City Tournament

BELL CITY – The Lake Arthur (LA) Lady Tigers picked up a pair of wins on Saturday by blasting both South Cameron (SC) and Grand Lake (GL) 18-3 and 13-7, respectively in the Bell City Tournament. The wins upped the Lady Tigers overall mark to 7-8 on the season.

In the first game, LA spotted SC an early 2-1 lead after one inning, but it was all Lady Tigers from there. LA put up 3 runs in the second, 2 in the third and 12 in the fifth to earn the 10-run rule victory.

Child shot

On Saturday morning, Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call regarding a child being shot. Deputies responded to an address in the 2000 block of Jeff Davis Academy Road in Jennings. Deputies learned that a two-yearold boy had sustained a gunshot wound.

The child was brought to a local hospital then transferred to a Baton Rouge hospital where his condition was listed as stable as of Sunday.

The investigation revealed that children located a loaded 9mm handgun that had not been properly secured. The weapon discharged and the toddler was shot.
