Parishwide Halloween activities planned

Jeff Davis Parish has plenty of activities planned for candy collectors this year, with festivities scheduled with the Halloween spirit in mind.

The Town of Lake Arthur will host its annual Boo on the Avenue Sunday, Oct. 28, from 3-7:30 p.m. on Arthur Avenue.

There will be a costume contest for both people and pups. Other activities beginning at 3 p.m. include a coloring contest and pumpkin decorating. There will be a goodie giveaway at 5 p.m. Forms for the contests can be picked up at Lake Arthur City Hall.

Cajun-style fiddle players of all ages and performance levels will take the stage at the Strand Theater next weekend to tout their skills and carry on Acadian tradition.

The fourth Annual Battle of the Bows Cajun Fiddle Competition returns Saturday, Nov. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Strand Theatre in Jennings. Doors open at 8 a.m.

Organizers say the competition has quickly grown in popularity, not only among the community, but also among southwest Louisiana musicians.

EPA seeks public feedback

Residents urged to submit observations on Superfund cleanup

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) hosted an informal meeting in Jennings Thursday to update locals about ongoing cleanup at the SBA Shipyard Superfund site.

“We want the public’s help and are here tonight to give residents the opportunity to submit observations and concerns,” EPA remedial project manager Michael Torres said. “We want you to be able to have an impact on the process to find a solution.”

EDWARDS TRAVELS TO ISRAEL TO TALK TRADE, CYBERSECURITY

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Louisiana’s governor is headed to Israel for a weeklong trip focused on possible trade prospects, energy issues and the cybersecurity industry.

Gov. John Bel Edwards is leading the 24-person delegation leaving Friday.

The group will return Nov. 2 after spending days in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Going on the trip are Edwards’ wife, economic development officials, business leaders and researchers in water management, logistics, higher education and cybersecurity.

 

HOSPITAL LOCKED DOWN OVER GUN REPORT, BUT NO GUN FOUND

LAKE CHARLES (AP) — A Louisiana hospital was put on lockdown and a man who went there to visit his daughter was confronted by a SWAT team in what police later called a case of mistaken identity.

News outlets report police responded Thursday to a report of a suspicious person who might have a gun at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.

Edgar Sanchez tells news outlets he had gone to pick up his daughter who had surgery for a broken arm when a SWAT team detained him. Deputy Chief Mark Kraus says police determined he didn’t have a weapon.

Debate erupts over Halloween costumes crossing racial lines

PHOENIX (AP) — When Colorado attorney Jeff Schwartz asked his 7-year-old son what he wanted to dress as this Halloween, the answer was clear: his favorite movie superhero, “Black Panther.”

Schwartz said his white son’s choice of a black character didn’t give him pause.

“I didn’t give it a second thought,” said Schwartz. “I think that if my son wants to idolize a character — be it a black character or a white character — race doesn’t need to come into it at all.”

US: ‘Everything on table’ to block migrants at border

CALEXICO, California (AP) — Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Friday that “everything is on the table” as the administration considered new measures to stifle immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border and send a message that a slow-moving migrant caravan bound for the United States will not be welcome.

KC Council 2012 Donates to Caring Hands

Garden Club recognizes October Gardens of the Month

The Jennings Garden Club recognized the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home as Business Garden of the Month for October. The home is located at 1610 Evangeline Hwy. Pictured is Mr. Ryan Guidry. Republican Women welcome speakers

Jeff Davis Republican Women recently hosted club meetings.

In September, the group hosted one of the candidates for secretary of state, Turkey Creek Mayor Heather Cloud. Cloud said she was a victim of voter fraud herself in her first bid for mayor, and was given proof of it by citizens in her town. That led to a long process to obtain a second election, and eventually to get two laws passed by the State legislature to prevent voter fraud.
