US dispatches aircraft carrier over unspecified Iran threats

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is dispatching an aircraft carrier and other military resources to the Middle East following “clear indications” that Iran and its proxy forces were preparing to possibly attack U.S. forces in the region, a defense official told The Associated Press.

Harry, Meghan ‘absolutely thrilled’ about birth of baby boy

WINDSOR, England (AP) — Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, gave birth to a healthy baby boy early Monday, a beaming Prince Harry announced to the world, declaring he’s “incredibly proud” of his wife. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces (3.26 kilograms) at birth and was born at 5:26 a.m. (0426 GMT; 12:26 a.m. EDT). Harry said their son was a little bit overdue and that had given the royal couple more time to contemplate names.

Lawmakers strip increase for Louisiana legislative agencies

Local woman scammed out of $10,000

Scammers could be using information gathered from social media and the Internet to create stories that seem believable to unsuspecting targets.

A Jennings woman who was recently scammed out of $10,000 said law enforcement told her this is how some information about her and her grandson could have been obtained.

To protect her and her grandson’s privacy, she asked not to be named. However, she wanted to share her story in hopes of warning others.

LACASSINE - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) recently announced new lane closures on I-10 in the Lacassine area during the month of May.

In Jeff Davis Parish, the closures will affect I-10 westbound from milepost 48 in Lacassine to milepost 45 at the U.S. 165 overpass, according to a press release.

I-10 westbound at U.S. 165 will be reduced to one lane beginning May 9 through May 17.

LAKE ARTHUR - Lake Arthur is mourning the loss of a respected and wellknown member of their community.

Robert “Bobby” Palermo, 67, passed away on Saturday, May 4, in a Houston hospital after fighting a five-year battle with mesothelioma.

“Bobby fought the good fight and always had a positive attitude,” said Mayor Sherry Crochet. “I feel so blessed to have known Bobby.”

Crochet said this is a very sad time for the Town of Lake Arthur.

Palermo was a two-term town council member and he was currently serving as the mayor pro-temp.

With the hopes of starting a new tradition, James Ward Elementary School Principal Tanya Gaudet invited this year’s Jennings High School graduates to take a “Walk of Fame” through the hallways for the elementary students  to see seniors dressed in their graduation gowns. Gaudet said the younger children look up to the high school students and this was a way to inspire them to reach the goal of graduation for themselves.

Report: JDP job growth on the rise

The latest employment figures show job growth in the parish is on the rise.

According to preliminary estimates released this week by the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC), in Jeff Davis Parish, the unemployment rate for March was listed at 3.7 percent, which represents a nearly one percent decrease over last year. The report is released each month and looks at non-seasonally adjusted unemployment for the state.

The unemployment rate for JDP in March 2018 was 4.5 percent, and 4.2 percent last month in February.

WELSH – The Welsh Greyhound dominance over Many High School continued this weekend at Sportsman’s Park as the Hounds won a best-of-three quarterfinal series over the Tigers 2 games to 1 to advance to the state baseball tournament in Sulphur this week. Welsh is scheduled to play No.2-seeded Doyle on Wednesday night at 7:30 at McMurry Park’s Field 40.
