Town of Elton addressing drainage issues

ELTON - The Town of Elton is working to address drainage issues on Raymond Highway. Elton Mayor Tony Laughlin said this month the town would be cleaning out the culvert and addressing drainage issues on the west side of the highway. “Water stays there and becomes a mosquito breeding ground,” he said. “We will have to dig it out and grade it from the apartments all the way up to the Post Office.” He said it is one of several drainage projects he plans to address in the coming months. The cost of the project is $2,200.

Clifford Joseph ‘C.J.’ DeMary Jr.

Clifford Joseph “C.J.” DeMary Jr., 64, was born Dec. 12, 1954, and passed away Thursday, June 20, 2019, at Golden Age of Welsh Nursing Home.

C.J. was a native of Hathaway and a longtime resident of Crowley. He loved to dance.

Elie Stutes, Jr.

Funeral arrangements for Elie Stutes, Jr., 78, of Jennings will be announced by Miguez Funeral Home. Mr. Stutes died at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, June 20, 2019.

Matthew Frank Dossman, 61, passed away in his home peacefully into the arms of his Father, his Savior, on Father’s Day, June 16, 2019, after a week of service to the Father at his church’s vacation Bible school.

In keeping with the schedule of the Friday night Bible study, a Celebration of Life in memorial to Matt will be held on Friday, June 28, 2019, at his church, Roanoke Baptist Church.

The church will open at 3 p.m. and service will begin at 6 p.m., with Pastor Darrell Hieronymus and Evangelist Al King officiating.

Coolin’ the pups

With the temperatures climbing, both people and animals are feeling the heat.

According to Jennings Animal Control Officer Chelsi Leger, the dogs at the shelter were in need of something to cool off a bit.

“I have a lot of big dogs with thick coats,” said Leger. “It’s entirely too hot for them.”

Leger said they had a number of fans for the dogs but that just wasn’t enough.”

The fans were just circulating hot air, she said.

She said she had spoken to someone with the Acadia Parish shelter who recommended a misting system.

Third Annual HHS Alumni Tourney set for June 28, 29

HATHAWAY - Hathaway High School (HHS) is set to host its third annual Alumni Softball Tournament on Friday, June 28, and Saturday, July 29, at Sportsman’s Park in Welsh. According to tournament organizer Johnathon Navarre, the tournament has 13 teams entered and going strong in only its third campaign.

LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers had a heck of a run on the gridiron in 2018 before injuries and a brutal district plagued them down the stretch, and eventually dropped a firstround home playoff game to Northeast High School in a thriller that came down to the wire. Gone are many skill players, and numbers to Head Coach Mark Deshotel’s squad, however, an impressive spring showing and an improved returning offensive line leave the Lake Arthur head coach optimistic about the future in 2019.

During a recent weekly drill with the Jennings Fire Department (JFD), firefighters joined forces with members of the Jennings Police Department (JPD) and Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) to share knowledge, training and experience.
