Watershed grant submitted

The parish is seeking grant funds from the state for flood mitigation.

The Jeff Davis Police Jury approved an agreement for the purpose of applying for grant funding and acting in support of watershed region management activities in conjunction with the State of Louisiana Watershed Initiative.

City to demo three properties shared with parish

The city is moving forward on ridding the streets of several blighted properties that are owned by both the city and the parish.

This week the Jennings City Council voted to demolish and clean up three properties that have been condemned and deemed unsafe by the city inspector’s office. All three properties are partially owned by the city and the parish. They were adjudicated to the city at a rate of 79 percent and the parish at 21 percent.

“These properties are blighted and many of them are being used for illicit activity or to store drugs,” Mayor Henry Guinn said.

Fenton passes ban on pit bulls

FENTON - The village has now adopted an ordinance banning pit bulls from within its city limits. Residents were given 30 days from Tuesday’s meeting to remove all pit bulls. The deadline will be Thursday, Oct. 10.

“All council members voted in favor of banning the dogs,” said Mayor Eddie B. Alfred. “There was some opposition against the ban as well.”

The mayor explained that several residents felt they were taking the proper precautions to safeguard their dogs and others.

Band adjusts after director hospitalized

Jennings High School Band members are slowly adjusting to playing music without their beloved leader, Brandon Strain, who has been hospitalized after a recent medical emergency.

“The students are now more at ease after receiving positive reports on Mr. Strain’s condition,” said assistant director William Qualls. “I could see a difference in the kids earlier this week but now that they know he is making progress, they are not so worried.”

Most of the students had never experienced such a situation and Qualls said they didn’t know what to expect.

China to lift punitive tariffs on US soybeans, pork

BEIJING (AP) — China will lift punitive tariffs imposed on U.S. soybeans and pork in a trade war with Washington, a state news agency said Friday, adding to conciliatory gestures by the two sides ahead of negotiations.

China will suspend tariff hikes on soybeans, pork and some other farm goods, the Xinhua News Agency said, citing the Cabinet planning agency and the Commerce Ministry. Beijing “supports domestic companies in purchasing a certain amount of U.S. farm produce,” it said, but it gave no details.

HOUSTON (AP) — Joe Biden parried attack after attack from liberal rivals Thursday night on everything from health care to immigration in a debate that showcased profound ideological divides between the Democratic Party’s moderate and progressive wings.

The prime-time debate also elevated several struggling candidates, giving them a chance to introduce themselves to millions of Americans who are just beginning to follow the race.

Homecoming has always been a Lake Arthur tradition that brings with it a welcoming warmth to all those who experience it. The Town of Lake Arthur’s Homecoming is recognized mostly for its unity between past and present. This event continues each year to draw in alumni for a two-day trip down memory lane and a celebration like no other. This week begins the Homecoming season by giving a spotlight feature each week to this year’s Lake Arthur High School (LAHS) Homecoming Court Maids.

Iota High School would like to announce this year’s homecoming court. The following young women have been selected to represent their school.

Miss Amber Marie Boulet, daughter of Vickie and Darren Boulet. Amber has been a member of the Beta Club for three years, Art Club for four years and band and Color Guard for four years. She has also served as Color Guard Captain for three years. She will graduate as a member of the Iota High Honors Program. Upon graduation, Amber plans on attending McNeese State University, majoring in civil engineering.
