IBS diagnosis brings on low-FODMAP diet

Dear Doctor: I was recently diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and was told to follow something called the low-FODMAP diet. Honestly, this is all so new that it’s stressful and confusing. Can you explain what’s going on?

Dear Reader: First, you’re not alone in feeling overwhelmed by a new and unexpected diagnosis. Not only are you getting a crash course on an unfamiliar medical state or condition, you’re also being asked to master the details of a new treatment regimen. This can easily add to your stress.

The Lacassine Jr. High 4-H Club officers held a meeting on Sept. 4 to discuss their officer roles and plan National 4-H Week. Officers present were President Camille Sonnier, Vice President Kinzie Brassell, Secretary Audrey Hardy, Secretary Kaylee Fontenot, Treasurer Luke Mhire, Reporter Mandee Matt, Community Service Chair Caroline Webb and Community Service Chair Caitlin McKay.

Club learns about health clinic, RYLA

The Rotary Club of Welsh met Aug. 29 and welcomed three fifth graders from Welsh Elementary School. Enjoying lunch with the club were Kamron Aube, Lillian Bowers and Blaire Dupuis.

Club members also had the opportunity to hear Patricia Prudhomme, director of development for the Southwest Center for Health Services, speak about the opportunity for a center for health services being established in Welsh. She was introduced by Jim Wright. Prudhomme told the club the clinic would create non-medical jobs and provide more medical service to the area.

Do you have what it takes?

Did the coloring include yellow, cream or white in different patterns — streaked, blotched or mottled? Or did you see pink or purple foliage on a plant that had otherwise been only green before? Or maybe you have admired a beautiful flower that has more than one color.

LSU AgCenter plans crawfish workshops

CROWLEY – The LSU AgCenter will host five crawfish meetings in south Louisiana to help producers get ready for the upcoming season.

“Pond management, including water and vegetation management, are among the topics that will be addressed,” said Mark Shirley, LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant crawfish specialist.

Shirley and Greg Lutz, also an LSU AgCenter and Louisiana Sea Grant crawfish specialist, will lead the discussions and answer questions.

StoryTime at Burden botanic gardens set for Oct. 5

BATON ROUGE — Children between the ages of 3 and 8 are invited to enjoy book readings and related crafts during StoryTime in the Garden at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden in Baton Rouge on Oct. 5 in conjunction with the Corn Maze.

Presented at the LSU AgCenter Botanic Gardens at Burden, StoryTime features storybook readings and theme-related crafts for families and children.

Readings and activities will begin at 10 a.m. and are repeated every 30 minutes with the last reading at 11:30 a.m. The program will end at noon.

EMUS EVICTED FROM TOWN OF WELSH

WELSH - The emus have been evicted.

At the regular meeting of the Welsh Mayor and Board of Aldermen, the group approved an amendment which adds emus and other non-flying birds to the town's animal control ordinance. Two aldermen, Joe VanNess and Mary Sue Lyon, voted against the measure.
