Richard Joseph Hebert, 93, passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 8, 2019, surrounded by his five daughters, joining his wife and son in eternal rest.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, at 1 p.m., with Father Charles McMillian officiating.

The Hebert family requests visitation be held Friday, Sept. 13, 2019, from 4-9 p.m., with a Cursillo Rosary at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. until his funeral mass.

Danelle ‘Tookie’ Bruchhaus

ELTON - Danelle Bruchhaus, known to most as “Tookie,” passed away at the age of 72 on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at Jefferson Manor Nursing Home in Baton Rouge. She died after a long bout with Alzheimer’s.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Elton.

Friends and family are invited to be with us starting at 9 a.m. The service will begin at 10 a.m. and entombment will be held immediately following at St. Paul Cemetery.

NEW YORK (AP) — People who were too young on 9/11 to even remember their lost loved ones, and others for whom the grief is still raw, paid tribute with wreath-layings and the solemn roll call of the dead Wednesday as America marked the 18th anniversary of the worst terror attack on U.S. soil.

“As long as the city will gift us this moment, I will be here,” Margie Miller, who lost her husband, Joel, said as she attended the ground zero anniversary ceremony, as she has every year. “I want people to remember.”

US stocks move higher as China eases trade tensions

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks marched broadly higher Wednesday as investors snapped up technology companies following China’s move to exempt some U.S. products from a recent round of tariffs.

The tech sector, which has much to gain or lose in the trade war, moved broadly higher in the early going. Apple, which unveiled a variety of new products and services a day earlier, rose 1.8 percent. Chipmaker Nvidia rose 1.4 percent.

Energy and communications stocks also made strong gains. Oilfield services company Schlumberger rose 2 percent and AT&T rose 1.2 percent.

Turkish high court to review Wikipedia appeal against ban

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkey’s highest court on Wednesday began considering an appeal by Wikipedia aiming to reverse the Turkish government’s more than two-year ban on the online encyclopedia.

Turkey blocked Wikipedia in April 2017, accusing it of being part of a “smear campaign” against Turkey, after the website refused to remove content that allegedly portrayed Turkey as a country supporting the Islamic State group and terrorist organizations.

The Jennings Bulldogs will look to bounce back after a tough, week one loss to the Leesville Wampus Cats in overtime when they travel to Eunice to face the defending 3A state champion Bobcats Friday night. The Cats rallied for a school record 73-34 win over the Northwest Raiders after trailing 34-31 entering the fourth quarter. Eunice popped off 42 unanswered points in the fourth stanza to earn the lopsided victory that was a lot closer than the score indicates. The two teams will square off for the 66th time in this storied rivalry dating back to 1926.

Bulldog Bites

The Saints won on a last second 58-yard field goal. LSU sealed their game late with a 3rd and 17 Joe Burrow scoring pass that ended up sealing their win against a good Texas team. The Jennings Bulldogs lost in an overtime thriller against a top notch Leesville team that was 13-1 last year. How much more can our collective hearts take.
