Indians to square off with talented Vinton club

ELTON – The Elton Indians will be searching for a rebound win Friday night when they travel to Vinton to take on former Lake Arthur Tiger

standout Tarius Davis and the Vinton Lions at B.S. Walker Memorial Stadium. The Indians were shutout 13-0 against Oakdale last week, while the Lions were dropped by the St. Edmund Blue Jays at home. Despite the loss to the Jays, Elton Head Coach Donnie Bruchhaus was all praise when discussing what he has seen from the Lions on film heading into their week two clash.

Elton appoints new council member

ELTON - Monday the Elton Town Council appointed a new council member after Shirley Lafleur Johnson submitted her resignation in August after nearly a decade on the council.

The council unanimously voted to appoint former council member Michael Bellon to temporarily fill the role until an election can be held to allow voters to choose a permanent leader.

Johnson was reelected in 2018 but is resigning after nine years on the council due to irreconcilable differences with some council members and office staff, she said.

Event to help middle schoolers, parents gain new perspective

An upcoming event aims to bridge the communication gap between parents and middle schoolers, as well as show youth how to turn obstacles into opportunities.

“New Year, New Perspective” is geared toward students in grades 4-8 and their parents and will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the American Legion building on Market Street in Jennings. Sponsored by District Attorney Michael Cassidy and the Jeff Davis Parish Library, the program was created by Stephanie Broussard and Sheila Reed, founders of Breakthroughs, Etc. Participation is free and open to the public.

City approves measure

City officials approved a measure Tuesday that is expected to expedite the process used to notify violators of the city’s grass-cutting ordinance.

Last month the city introduced Ordinance No. 1755, amending sections 15-20 and 15-21 pertaining to grass cutting.

City attorney Kevin Millican said the amendment will enable the inspector’s office to more efficiently notify violators of the city’s grass-cutting ordinance.

“This will allow the inspector to send out notice, take action and proceed in a more efficient manner,” he said.

ABOB presents ‘Daddy’s Dyin’

A Block Off Broadway Community Theater will soon be entertaining the crowds at the historic Strand Theater on Main Street. Four performances of the play “Daddy’s Dyin’ Who’s Got the Will?” will take place this month.

“This production can be best described as ‘Steel Magnolias’ meets the ‘Beverly Hillbillies,’” said Director Joseph Frazier-Cole. “The play will include both comedic scenes and an element of drama as well.”

Production dates include Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept.

Pre-K students at Hathaway High School recently enjoyed their first Grandparents Day. The grandparents had an opportunity to visit the students’ classrooms to see all the new lessons the children have been learning.

Injuries force SEC teams to alter quarterback plans

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — This was supposed to be the year that the Southeastern Conference showcased its wealth of experienced quarterbacks up and down the league.

Plans have changed for a number of schools.

Injuries have wreaked havoc around the conference, forcing coaches to rely on newcomers.

South Carolina lost senior starter Jake Bentley to a foot injury during the opening week of the season. Kentucky’s Terry Wilson and Mississippi State’s Tommy Stevens were knocked out of games last week. Their replacements included two true freshmen and a transfer.

Watson shines, but Texans have problems to fix after loss

HOUSTON (AP) — Deshaun Watson did it all for the Houston Texans in their opener against New Orleans, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another one.

The Texans still left New Orleans with a loss because of a variety of problems, namely struggles on the offensive line and in the secondary.

Watson capped his big game by moving the offense 75 yards on just two plays, capped by a 37-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Stills to give Houston a 28-27 lead with just 37 seconds left.

Dominating Patriots remain No. 1 in AP Pro32 poll

NEW YORK (AP) — That was quite the opener for the New England Patriots.

The defending champs dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers 33-3 on Sunday night.

Now Tom Brady and company welcome wide receiver Antonio Brown to the lineup.

The Patriots not only remained on top of the latest AP Pro32 poll , but it was nearly unanimous.

New England received 11 of the 12 first-place votes for 383 points in balloting Tuesday by media members who regularly cover the NFL.
