LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers are seeking to start their season 2-0 this Friday night when they welcome in the DeQuincy Tigers for a nondistrict clash at Jack Doland Memorial Stadium. The Tigers rode the legs of senior Daylon Charles in a come-from-behind 28-26 win over Basile last Friday night. Charles racked up 228 yards and four TD’s in the win after the Tigers fell behind early. Lake Arthur Head Coach Mark Deshotel discussed last week’s contest, and looked at DeQuincy heading forward.

WELSH - As the Welsh Greyhounds prepare for the Iota Bulldogs this Thursday, one theme is going through the Greyhound practices. “We have to get a lot better on special teams,” stated Welsh head coach Cody Gueringer. “You can play great on offense and defense and still get beat because of special teams play. Last week we had a snap over the punter’s head that gave Rayne an easy six points and then we averaged only 21 yards per punt. We have to do a much better job in that area this week against Iota.”

Lutz’s 58-yard field goal lifts Saints over Texans

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Drew Brees and Wil Lutz supplied the accuracy and poise New Orleans needed to overcome another officiating gaffe and its defense’s late collapse.

Lutz made a 58-yard field goal as time expired, and the Saints beat the Houston Texans 30-28 on Monday night in a game that had three scoring plays in the final minute.

“That one’s got to be a topone moment for me,” Lutz said, adding that as much as he tries to treat each kick the same, “I got to be honest. That one felt a little different.”

Hoerner 3 hits, 4 RBIs in debut, Cubs beat Padres 10-2

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nico Hoerner went from sitting on his couch in Oakland and watching the Chicago Cubs on TV on Sunday to having a remarkable major league debut with them on Monday night.

The touted prospect had three hits and four RBIs in his big league debut and made some nice plays at shortstop for the Cubs, who beat the San Diego Padres 10-2 Monday night to snap a three-game losing streak.

Raiders beat Broncos 24-16 in 1st game after Brown’s release

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The night started with Oakland Raiders fans derisively chanting at former disgruntled receiver Antonio Brown and ended with coach Jon Gruden celebrating a victory in the Black Hole.

The saga that consumed the football world for days didn’t hamper the Raiders a bit.

Derek Carr threw a touchdown pass on the opening drive of the season, rookie Josh Jacobs ran for two scores and the Raiders responded to a tumultuous week surrounding Brown by beating the Denver Broncos 24-16 on Monday night.

School name suggestions to be sought

The process will soon get underway to decide the name of Ward II’s upcoming pre-k through sixth grade campus.

In a press release from the Jeff Davis Parish School Board, the naming processes and timelines required by board policy will begin Sept. 23.

Rice, rice, baby

Southwest Louisiana plays a big role in the rice farming industry. Because of global importance and nutritional value of the rice, National Rice Month is celebrated to increase the awareness of rice farming. September is also a time to recognize rice farmers and their dedication to growing this sustainable food.

According to the LSU Ag Center, more than 30 parishes in Louisiana grow rice, making the state the third largest producer in the country.

Parish mulls applying for watershed grant funding

The parish is looking into seeking grant funds as part of the governor’s $90 billion disaster-recovery package.

The parish will consider the approval of an agreement for the purpose of applying for grant funding and acting in support of watershed region management activities in conjunction with the State of Louisiana Watershed initiative.
