Twenty people were booked into the parish jail by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office over the past week.

Tiffany Raquel Gordon, 38, of Jennings, was charged with aggravated battery.

Welsh man arrested for failure to register as sex offender

A Welsh man is currently in custody to failing to report as a sex offender after moving to Texas.

On Wednesday Sept. 4, Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) deputies arrested John Claude King, Jr., of Welsh for failure to register and notify as a sex offender, according to Chief Deputy Chris Ivey.

Ivey said King was arrested in Galveston County, Texas, July 2 for possession of marijuana.

Galveston County authorities reported the arrest to JDSO sex offender watch deputies.

US health officials report 3rd vaping death, repeat warning

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials on Friday again urged people to stop vaping until they figure out why some are coming down with serious breathing illnesses.

Officials said they had identified 450 possible cases, including at least three deaths, in 33 states. The count includes a newly reported death in Indiana.

No single vaping device, liquid or ingredient has been tied to all the illnesses, officials said. Many of the sickened — but not all — were people who said they had been had been vaping THC, the chemical that gives marijuana its high.

A celebration of John’s life will be held Sept. 21, 2019, at Lake Arthur Community Center from 10 a.m. until noon.

John was born in Jennings on Sept. 19, 1991, and was raised in Lake Arthur on Morgan Shores. John lived life to the fullest, loved deeply and never met a stranger. His broad smile, infectious laugh and witty sense of humor will forever be ingrained in the hearts of those who know and love him.

(AP) — A weakened Hurricane Dorian flooded homes on North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Friday with a fury that took even storm-hardened residents by surprise, forcing people to retreat to their attics. Hundreds were feared trapped by high water, and neighbors used boats to rescue one another.

Generic drugmaker settles two opioid lawsuits

CLEVELAND (AP) — One of the largest makers of generic opioids has settled a lawsuit with two Ohio counties, removing the company from the first federal trial over the toll of the opioid crisis.

United Kingdom-based Mallinckrodt announced the deal with Cuyahoga and Summit counties on Friday. Under the settlement, the company would pay a total of $24 million and donate products, including some used to treat addiction, worth another $6 million.

Brexit crisis grows as opposition rejects snap election call

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s bedeviling Brexit dilemma intensified Friday, as opposition parties refused to support Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s call for an election until he secures a delay to Britain’s exit from the European Union — something he vows he’ll never do.

Johnson insists Britain must leave the EU in 55 days, and says an election is the only way to break the deadlock that has seen lawmakers repeatedly reject the divorce deal on offer, but also block attempts to leave the EU without one.
