American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) is a native shrub of North America. It can be found growing naturally in southeastern woodlands and along the edges of forests from Oklahoma and Texas all through the South and on up into Maryland. It can also be found growing natively in the Caribbean and northern Mexico. A plant with a rich history, American beautyberry can be found growing in low, rich bottomlands, at the edges of swamps, in piney woods and in coastal woodlands.

LSU AgCenter gets OK to bring salvinia weevils to Puerto Rico

BATON ROUGE — After working a week with U.S. Department of Agriculture and Puerto Rican government officials, the LSU AgCenter has received permission to bring salvinia weevils to the island territory. The weevils will be a major part of a comprehensive management plan to help fight a giant salvinia infestation.

Charlie Wahl, an entomology research associate with the AgCenter, spent seven days in Puerto Rico documenting the magnitude of the salvinia problem and collecting baseline data such as oxygen levels and nutrients in waterbodies having salvinia.

LUNCH PRICES UP IN 5 SCHOOLS

The Jefferson Davis Parish School Board in its regular monthly meeting last night approved an increase in school lunches at five parish schools. The biggest increase will be at Jennings High School, where a 10-cent increase, or a total of 30 cents per day, will be charged. The others, all 5-cent increases bringing the cost of school unties to 25 cents, were Jennings Northside, Jennings Ward Elementary, Lacassine High School and Lake Arthur High School.

BABY ORANGUTAN MAY VENTURE OUT WITH MAMA AT NEW ORLEANS ZOO

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Visitors can now see the baby orangutan born less than two months ago at the New Orleans zoo, but only when her mother decides to come outdoors.

Bulan (BOO-lon) was born July 17 to longtime Audubon Zoo resident Feliz and to Jambi, a male Sumatran orangutan brought from Germany late last fall.

Zoo spokeswoman Lauren Messina Conrad says her name means “Moon” in Indonesia’s official language. Conrad says Bulan will spend many months clinging to Feliz — something she can do even when asleep.

DROWNING VICTIM’S BODY RECOVERED FROM LOUISIANA RIVER

DERIDDER (AP) — The body of a 40-year-old woman who drowned in the Sabine River has been recovered.

KPLC-TV reports the body of Dolly Joyce Laughlin was pulled from the waterway in Louisiana Thursday morning.

Beauregard Parish Sheriff Ricky Moses says his office received a call at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday that Laughlin had been swept away by the current near the Palmer Lake Boat Launch and could not be located.

Sample ballots available

Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters (ROV) Joann Blair announced that sample ballots for the Oct. 12 election are now available at her office, as well as online.

The Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS) released the ballot this week so that residents will have time to prepare before casting their vote this fall.

Parish JPs, constables request raise

The parish justices of the peace and constables asked the police jury Wednesday for more compensation, which has been set at the same rate for nearly 30 years.

Ward 1 Justice of the Peace Debbie Abshire-Sonnier, who has been serving in her role for the last 17 years, requested a monthly raise of $35 along with payment of yearly conference costs.

She explained the JP’s duties include performing wedding ceremonies, handling evictions and small claims under $5,000.

Registrar of Voters Office (ROV) has teamed up with the Louisiana Secretary of State to encourage voters who are 17 years of age or older to register to vote. Their voter record will be activated upon their 18th birthday.
