Susan Kathleen Duhon Ferris

 On Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, Susan Kathleen Duhon Ferris passed away at the age of 77.  

In respect of her wishes, Susan will be cremated and a private family memorial will be held to honor and celebrate her life.  Cremation has been entrusted to Simple Traditions by Johnson Funeral Home.

Susan was born in Welsh on July 3, 1942.  She spent most of her childhood in Jennings before moving to Lake Charles as a young adult.  She worked at Calcasieu Marine National Bank in Lake Charles during the late 1970s and early 1980s.

LAKE ARTHUR - Funeral services for Mrs. Genevieve Conner Hoffpauir, 90, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2019, at noon in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, with Father Jay Alexius officiating.

Visitation will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, in the Oustalet Center from 8:30 a.m. until time of service. A rosary will be prayed at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow in St. Anthony Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.

COA Holds Country Store Fundraiser

The Council on Aging held its Country Store Fundraiser on Thursday morning. A large variety of items were up for grabs. All money raised will go toward purchasing new exercise equipment for the Wellness Program.

Texas hoping to revive law on burial of fetal remains

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Arguments over a Texas law requiring that health care clinics bury or cremate fetal remains from abortions and miscarriages are set for a federal appeals court in New Orleans.

A Texas judge blocked the law last year. U.S. District Judge David Ezra ruled that many clinics would be unable to meet the law’s requirements, thus creating unconstitutional obstacles for women seeking abortions. He also found that violated constitutional equal protection requirements by exempting in-vitro fertilization clinics and some laboratories.

Hurricane Dorian rakes Carolinas as it moves up the coast

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Hurricane Dorian raked the Carolina coast with howling, window-rattling winds and sideways rain Thursday, spinning off tornadoes and knocking out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses as it pushed northward toward the dangerously exposed Outer Banks.

Leaving at least 20 people dead in its wake in the devastated Bahamas, Dorian swept past Florida on Wednesday at a relatively safe distance, grazed Georgia overnight, and then began hugging the South Carolina coastline with more serious effects.

Michigan to become first state to ban flavored e-cigarettes

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer moved Wednesday to make her state the first to ban flavored electronic cigarettes, accusing companies of using candy flavors and deceptive advertising to “hook children on nicotine.”

US farmers hope Trump delivers on trade deal with Japan

PJ may apply for energy upgrade program

The Jeff Davis Police Jury is considering applying for funding from the state that could save the parish thousands annually in electricity costs.

Audie Hanks with H&H Electrical Service of Crowley says he can replace the lighting at the courthouse and possibly the police jury annex with more efficient LED lighting at no cost to the parish.

“This program is totally free through the Louisiana Public Service Commissioner (LPSC) and is available for all public entities,” he said.
