Trump displays textbook ‘malignant narcissism’

Some days I wonder if American democracy can survive the 2020 presidential campaign. Other times, I pray that The Mooch is right: that facing defeat, Donald J. Trump will contrive an excuse not to run for a second term.

Trump’s fragile ego, former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci told Vanity Fair, couldn’t survive losing. “He’s got the self-worth in terms of his self-esteem of a small pigeon. It’s a very small pigeon.”

Dogs to open season against talented Leesville

The Jennings Bulldogs will kick off their regular season this Friday night at Jerry Simmons Stadium by facing 4A power Leesville in a highly anticipated contest. The Wampus Cats finished the 2018 season an impressive 13-1, coming one win shy of reaching the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. However, like a lot of teams around the area, Leesville is searching for players to replace seniors from last year’s squad. Leesville opened last week in jamboree action with perennial 2A power Many and tied 15-15 with the Tigers in 24 minutes of football.

Welsh seeking to cut down mistakes in clash with 4A Wolves

WELSH - The Welsh Greyhounds and the Lake Arthur Tigers already have something in common this early in the football season. Both are searching for a new tailback after losing their starter to injury. Welsh’s junior starter Jaheim Simon injured a knee in the jamboree and his participation for the remainder of the year is in question.

Welsh first year head coach Cody Gueringer will go to the platoon system to find a replacement for Simon.

Bottoming out: SEC’s top teams roll, other squads struggle

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — With several SEC teams reeling from opening-week flops the Southeastern Conference didn’t look like “top to bottom” the best league in the country as its coaches have long proclaimed.

Only the top teams did their part.

SEC teams in the bottom portion of the standings are looking to rebound after embarrassing setbacks, lowlighted by Tennessee’s loss to Georgia State . So yes, the top of the SEC is still mighty with Georgia and Alabama and a handful of other teams looking formidable in their openers.

Local candidates attend forum

The Chamber of Southwest Louisiana held a candidate forum Wednesday morning at SOWELA Technical Community College Morgan Smith Campus.

Candidates running for District 37 State Representative, District 25 State Senator, as well as well as several other candidates hoping to fill seats in Allen, Beauregard and Calcasieu parishes were in attendance.

The candidates were asked a number of questions by a panel made up of members of the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance and Acadiana One.

Four amendments to appear on Oct. 12 ballot

Voters will see four constitutional amendments on the ballot for the Oct. 12 election.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office (SOS), the constitutional amendments address a tax exemption, appropriations for the state’s Education Excellence Fund, the recovery of unconstitutional taxes paid and a tax exemption for affordable housing.

Proposed amendment No. 1 (Act 444) would authorize an exemption for certain property destined for the outer Continental Shelf and provide definitions and an effective date and other related matters.

WPD welcomes K-9 Storm

The Town of Welsh was officially introduced to its latest law enforcement officer, K-9 Storm, during Tuesday’s meeting of Mayor Carolyn Louviere and the board of aldermen. With his handler David Amron by his side, Storm was commissioned by town attorney and Jeff Davis Parish Clerk of Court Rick Arceneaux.

Welsh plans hearing for clinic rezoning

WELSH - A public hearing will be held here Oct. 1 on the possible rezoning of Polk Street property that could be used as the site of a medical clinic.

The property is currently zoned as mixed residential. Bayou Comprehensive Health Center is interested in buying the property to open a clinic there that would provide primary, dental and mental care and substance abuse recovery services to the public. Patients with or without insurance, as well as those covered by Medicaid, would be accepted.
