Parish sets fall events

A host of activities have been slated across the parish for all residents to enjoy during the coming months.

“Fall is our busiest time for events,” said Jeff Davis Parish Tourist Commission Graphics and Communications Coordinator Jamie Lee. “Most are free admission and familyfriendly.”

The Council on Aging is hosting its Country Store Fundraiser from 7-11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.

4-H to hold Catch Phrase for Camp theme contest

As a way of making members to be creative and feel more involved, the 4-H Catch Phrase Theme Contest allows members to submit their own ideas of what the theme of next year’s camp will be.

“Any 4-H member is allowed to come up with a brief slogan of seven words or less that will be used on all publicity for the camp and the design will be printed on each camper’s shirt,” said Jeff Davis 4-H extension agent Amy Welch. “The phrase should be catchy to help capture the spirit of 4-H Camp Grant Walker.”

An illustration must accompany each entry and will be part of the contest.

Pentagon defers projects to fund border wall

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Mark Esper approved the use of $3.6 billion in funding from military construction projects to build 175 miles (282 kilometers) of President Donald Trump’s wall along the Mexican border.

Pentagon officials would not say which 127 projects will be affected but said details will be available Wednesday after members of Congress are notified. They said half the money will come from military projects in the U.S. and the rest will come from projects in other countries.

LAKE ARTHUR - Funeral services for Jeanette Marie Duhon, 73, of Lake Arthur were held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Lake Arthur Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at 2 p.m., with Rev. Mitchell Gotte and Rev. Mickey Istre officiating.

A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home beginning Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, from 3-9 p.m. Visitation resumed Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, from 9 a.m. until the time of her service at 2 p.m.

Burial followed in St. Anthony’s Cemetery.

. Garbage pickup delays, now back on track

LAKE ARTHUR - After a host of vehicle repairs, the Town of Lake Arthur should now be back on track with garbage pickup. Collection was delayed last week due to repairs being made on the city’s three garbage trucks.

“Just like every other town or company, we’ve had problems with rats eating the wires on the trucks,” said Mayor Sherry Crochet. “No matter how much poison we’ve put out, we are constantly fighting the same problem.”

Crochet said they continue to do all they can to resolve the issue.

Gerard Conner, 61, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2019, at his home in Bastrop. He had battled health problems for over a decade.

A 1976 graduate of St. Maria Goretti Catholic School in Lake Arthur, Gerard had a big heart for those less fortunate than himself. He loved hunting, fishing and making others laugh. Gerard was also an avid Saints and LSU football fan. He will be missed by family and friends.

Funeral services for Harvey Gotte, 73, will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2019, in Miguez Funeral Home of Jennings, with Bro. Ray Wells officiating.

Burial will be in Gatte Cemetery.

Funeral home visitation was held from 3-8 p.m. Tuesday and will continue from 8 a.m. Wednesday until time of services.

Mr. Gotte died at 12:36 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, in Gueydan Memorial Guest House.
