Funeral services for Rodney Alan Fruge, 59, of Welsh were held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019, at 11 a.m., with Father Charles McMillin officiating. A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home beginning Monday, Sept. 2, from 3:30-9 p.m., with a Rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation resumed Tuesday, Sept.r 3, 2019, from 8 a.m. until the time of his service at 11 a.m. Burial followed in Andrus Cove Cemetery. Rodney was born in Jennings on Sept. 1, 1959, to Leonard Fruge and Leona Dupuis Fruge.

‘Catastrophic’: Dorian parks over the Bahamas

FREEPORT, Bahamas (AP) — Practically parking over the Bahamas for over a day and a half, Hurricane Dorian pounded away at the islands Tuesday in a watery onslaught that devastated thousands of homes, trapped people in attics and crippled hospitals. At least five deaths were reported, with the full extent of the damage far from clear.

The United Nations and the International Red Cross began mobilizing to deal with the unfolding humanitarian crisis. Prime Minister Hubert Minnis called it “a historic tragedy.”

Searchers look for nine missing in Calif. boat fire, 25 die

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Divers and search crews were still looking Tuesday for nine missing people after at least 25 were confirmed dead when a boat packed with scuba divers caught fire near an island off the Southern California coast.

The dive-boat Conception became engulfed in flames before dawn as the passengers on a recreational scuba diving trip slept below deck.

“You couldn’t ask for a worse situation,” Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters.

LAKE ARTHUR - The Lake Arthur Tigers are faced with a dilemma that does not directly involve this week’s opponent, the Basile Bearcats. The big question in Tigerland this week is who will take the place of the injured Torrell Levias at tailback in the split-veer attack of the Tigers.

Levias suffered a lower leg injury near the end of Lake Arthur’s jamboree contest against Erath, and now head coach Mark Deshotel must work out a replacement at the position.

ELTON - Coming off a jamboree win over Abbeville’s junior varsity 22-8, the Elton Indians will now open the season on the road against the 2A Oakdale Warriors Friday night. The Warriors are a new face on the Indians’ schedule this season, and also bring a new coaching staff to the program which hasn’t had a winning season since 2011.

Newest Lacassine park tenant to fill jobs

LACASSINE - The newest tenant at the Lacassine Industrial Park has broken ground and will soon be looking to hire around 50 new employees.

Jeff Davis Economic Development Director Marion “Butch” Fox says Equilibrium Catalyst will be looking to fill at least 50 jobs including general managers, field managers, mechanical workers and other operators.

“They have broken ground are now looking to hire staff,” Fox said. “We want as many of those employees to be from right here in Jeff Davis Parish so we encourage anyone looking for employment to apply.”

Pursuit closes I-10 for over two hours

WELSH - A homicide suspect led state and local police on a chase, ending in a standoff that caused I-10 to be closed in Welsh for over two hours on Monday.

Trinity Daqwan Coleman, 36, of Franklin, was arrested Monday and charged with attempted-second degree murder and illegal carrying/ discharge of weapons.

According to Louisiana State Police Public Affairs Trooper Derek Senegal, Coleman was wanted in Franklin in reference to a homicide that occurred there earlier that morning.
