Titans prepare for Chiefs with Mahomes expected to start

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — For Kansas City coach Andy Reid, the decision on when Patrick Mahomes plays again is easy.

It’s when the reigning NFL MVP is physically ready.

Turns out that’s Sunday when the Chiefs visit Tennessee. Barring a setback, Mahomes will start despite dislocating his right kneecap Oct. 17 in a win at Denver. The Chiefs (6-3) went 2-1 with Matt Moore. Combined with sights set on a fourth straight AFC West title, that makes it easier to think longer term than Sunday’s kickoff on the road in Tennessee.

Born Dec. 13, 1924, Navy veteran Jack Leon Havens will soon turn 95 years old. Over the years, he has collected a lifetime of memories serving in many different occupations, always doing the best job he possibly could.

“My father is a man with high morals whose parents taught him manners and to show kindness to all he met,” said his daughter Gayle McFarlain. “He taught me the value of hard work by example. He worked from the age of 13 until he was 75 years old.”

Havens wasn’t born in Louisiana but has resided at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home for the past two years.

Trump to kick off NYC Veterans Day Parade, offer tribute

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will speak at the opening ceremony of the New York City Veterans Day Parade next week as he returns to a city he no longer calls home, organizers and the White House announced Wednesday.

United War Veterans Council Chairman Douglas McGowan said Trump will offer a tribute to veterans ahead of Monday’s 100th annual parade.

While presidents have always been invited, McGowan said that, as far as he knows, Trump is the first to accept.

JDEC PLANS OUTAGE

Jeff Davis Electric will perform maintenance near its Tupper Substation beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13. The outage is scheduled to last about four hours.

Areas that will be affected, according to JDEC, include the Coushatta Tribe community and areas surrounding Elton.

RED SNAPPER SEASON NOW INCLUDES VETERANS DAY

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Recreational fishing for red snapper will be allowed on Veterans Day this year in Louisiana waters and adjacent federal waters. The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says Secretary Jack Montoucet has signed a declaration approving an additional day of red snapper fishing on Monday, Nov. 11.

The department news release says it will be in addition to the current weekends-only season that is open until further notice.

REENACTORS TO REMEMBER 1811 SLAVE REBELLION

LaPLACE (AP) — Hundreds of people are set to take part in a performance artwork reenacting the largest slave rebellion in U.S. history.

The reenactment in Louisiana was conceived by Dread Scott, an artist who often tackles issues of racial oppression and injustice.

Starting Friday, the reenactors will walk from LaPlace in southern Louisiana’s sugar plantation country to the outskirts of New Orleans over two days. They will be wearing period costumes and holding machetes.

Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home hosted a Friday ceremony where guest speaker Brigadier Gen. Greg Parker paid tribute to all service members who made sacrifices for their country. Today’s edition of Jennings Daily News  s dedicated to the men and women who served not only the nation, but its small communities like those found in Jeff Davis Parish.

With early voting wrapping up this weekend, there is only one chance left for voters to cast their ballots in the Nov. 16 Gubernatorial General Election.

Sample ballots can be obtained from from the Louisiana Secretary of State. Voters can download the Geaux Vote smartphone app to view the ballot or get their polling location.
