A Mass of Christian burial for Frederick Paul Miller, 62, of Basile was held at St. Jules Catholic Church in Tee Mamou Monday, Sept. 21, 2020, at 1 p.m.

A gathering of family and friends was held at the funeral home Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020, from 3-8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. The family requested that visitation resume Monday from 8 a.m. until the time of his funeral mass. Frederick was laid to rest in St. Jules/ Tee Mamou Cemetery.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church for Bradford Lane “Brad” Thibodaux, 66, of Roanoke today, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, at 3 p.m., with Father Keith Pellerin officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home beginning today, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020, from 9 a.m. until the time of his funeral mass, with a rosary recited at 11 a.m.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Petition seeks to recall Edwards

A movement to have Gov. John Bel Edwards recalled is gaining momentum around the state, including in Jeff Davis Parish.

According to geauxrecall.com, a web site set up to provide information on the matter, reasons for the recall seem to be related to the governor’s response to COVID-19. The petition alleges that Edwards is “impeding the constitutional freedoms and livelihoods of all Louisiana citizens without concrete scientific data” and is “unconstitutionally mandating that masks be worn in all public places.”

City traffic on the rise since storm

Officials say traffic congestion has increased substantially in the north end of the city since Hurricane Laura.

“Officers have been working five times the number of accidents that we normally work, especially on La. 26,” said Jennings Police Department Chief Danny Semmes.

With work crews and displaced Lake Charles residents flooding Jennings, Semmes reminds drivers here to use extra caution.

“We ask that people slow their speed and exercise caution,” he said. “There is tremendous traffic congestion, especially on the north end of town.”

Nov. 4 last day to register for December election

Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters Joann Blair would like to remind voters that Nov. 4 is the last day to register to vote in person for the Dec. 5 Open General Congressional Election.

Blair would like to remind voters to get signed up to vote and update their voter registration records before it is too late.

Group cautions against labor trafficking post-Laura

Southwest Louisiana (SWLA) Abolitionists is made up of people dedicated to fighting human trafficking through awareness, prevention, rescue and restoration. Amidst clean up and restoration efforts following Hurricane Laura, it is important to keep in mind that modern day slavery, through trafficking, still exists.

Four people killed in single-engine airplane crash in Texas

HILLTOP LAKES, Texas (AP) — Four people from Louisiana were killed when their single-engine airplane crashed in a Texas pasture while attempting an emergency landing, authorities said. The crash happened Sunday morning near the airport in Hilltop Lakes, about 120 miles (193 kilometers) northwest of Houston. The Texas Department of Public Safety said all four people aboard the aircraft were killed, according to the The Eagle newspaper.

Bryson DeChambeau was not the least bit concerned by the narrow fairways or the ankle-deep rough that shape Winged Foot into historically the toughest of all U.S. Opens. With his extra 40 pounds of muscle and mass, he wanted to pound it into submission with his driver, even if his errant shots were buried in deep grass.
