Parish to resume debris pickup

After much debate, the parish will resume debris pickup immediately.

Last week, the parish halted debris pickup over concerns around the cost. So far, the parish has already spent their budgeted amount of $1.8 million for debris removal with around 40 percent of the parish left to cover — particularly the western portion of the parish where power was out for a longer period of time.

Local man charged in stabbing deaths

Two people are dead following a violent Wednesday morning altercation over money in Jennings.

Kedrick “Shug” Nixon, 35, of Jennings, is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder in the stabbing deaths of Kristan Thibodeaux, 24, and David Shawn Authement, 33, also of Jennings.

City police responded to a call from a residence at the corner of West Division and Down streets around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday. A caller reported a female, later identified as Thibodeaux, had been stabbed. She was located in the driveway when police arrived.

Following a bitter dispute over an anonymously sourced article in The Atlantic that quoted their hero calling American war dead in a French cemetery “suckers” and “losers” for being fool enough to serve their country, nothing less would have convinced them.

I have had the opportunity to survey I a bit of several of our area parishes and yet am told that those areas I haven’t seen are much worse. I don’t know how to define “worse” because each of us has our own opinion, and the more we are personally involved, the more intense “worse” gets.

Tribe receives preservation grant from federal government

ELTON – The Coushatta Tribe of Louisiana has received a $50,000 Tribal Heritage grant through the Historic Preservation Fund, administered by the National Park Service, Department of Interior. HPF grants fund tribal preservation programs, assist tribes in the preservation of their cultural heritage, and promote the protection of historically significant sites.

To mark the first day of autumn, children visited the Elton Library Tuesday afternoon to read Deborah Diesen’s “Hello, Fall,” and create their own season-inspired trees.

 

Early voting extended

According to the Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters Office, in addition to the early voting period being extended to 10 days, from Oct. 16-27, early voting hours have been extended for the Nov. 3 election and will be held from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.

Library available for virtual services

The Jeff Davis Parish Library System would like to remind those affected by Hurricane Laura that library staff is prepared and ready to provide assistance with virtual services. The Jennings branch is reporting an increase in the number of people from all around who visit the library to use computers, copiers, fax machines and wi-fi services.

There is no word from the state yet on whether or not public school students will have to make up any lost classroom time due to Hurricane Laura.
