LIFE MISERABLE LIQUOR FOR LAW VIOLATORS

Bill Stevens and Mary Lazair are today languishing in the parish bastille, awaiting trial on a charge of selling and possessing intoxicating liquor for beverage purposes.

Both were taken Saturday night by officers from the sheriff’s department. Stevens is charged with the sale of liquor, same having taken place at the pool hall. The woman is charged with possession, a jug of liquor having been found at her home by officers.

Jennings mayor to see challenger

Qualifying for the spring election continued through Friday.

Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn will face police juror Melvin Adams in the race for mayor.

As of Thursday, there were 10 candidates who qualified for races in Jeff Davis Parish.

According to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s Office, the following candidates signed up to run in the election so far:

Incumbent Henry Guinn Melvin Adams

• District A council member

Incumbent Carolyn Simon

Carolyn Washington

Bourgeois’ recognized as Family of the Month

During the January meeting of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Jennings, the family of Roderick and Renee’ Bourgeois was named the Council’s Family of the Month for December 2020.

CADA shares needs list

Communities Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) in Jeff Davis Parish has shared a list of products the shelter is in need of.

Victims Advocate Dayna Bell said she received a call recently asking what the shelter needed. She decided to share a list of supplies on CADAs Facebook page in case any other potential donors wanted to help.

“There’s always someone here who needs to wash their clothes, or use toilet paper, or brush their teeth. So this is just an ongoing list of items our residents do use on the regular,” said BelL

Leave policy extended but members want more talks

Some Jeff Davis Parish School Board members would like discussions to take place on whether or not additional paid leave should be given to employees exposed to COVID-19, no matter if an employee has used all of his or her allotted sick days.

Cheramies named 2020-21 Family of the Year

During the January meeting of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians (OLHC) Parish in Jennings, the family of Paul and Cindy Cheramie was named the Council’s Family of theYear for 2020-2021.

Angelle named Knight of the Year

During the January meeting of Knights of Columbus Council 2012 from Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in Jennings Frank Angelle (left) was named the Council’s Knight of the Year for 2020-2021. Grand Knight Carl Benoit (right) presented the award.

Frank has been an active member of the Knights of Columbus since April of 2003, and he is a Fourth Degree Knight. He currently serves as Council 2012’s Lecturer, and during monthly meetings he provides valuable insights regarding issues facing the Roman Catholic Church.

Transport to NYC, fosters needed

Several four-legged residents of Jennings are making their way to their new homes in the Big Apple this weekend.

On Friday, Wet Nose Riders, a rescue group based in Crowley, picked up five dogs and puppies from the animal shelter here, taking them on a trip to Hornell Area Humane Society in NewYork City, where theywill be vetted and placed in their “furever” homes.

Jennings Animal Control Officer Chelsi Leger said she teamed up with the rescue group after they helped her find a home for a pregnant dog.
