Strawberries are sensational

It’s strawberry planting time! Louisiana has a long history of strawberries dating back to the 1800s, and business really began to boom in the early 1900s. According to the LSU AgCenter’s latest data, the Louisiana strawberry industry has a gross farm value of $8.4 million.

Tangipahoa Parish is still the leading strawberry-producing parish, growing 75% of the total acres in Louisiana and accounting for 79% of the state’s total gross farm value. Louisiana strawberries can be found in grocery stores, farmers markets and roadside stands as early as November, December and January.

To some of the old settlers of this area, this is a “Red Letter Day.” For it is the 55th anniversary of the “Big Snow.”

After days of unseasonable temperatures, the weatherman gives a reminder of that occasion today as the mercury has been sent skidding. Early this morning the reading went down to a cool 44, a far cry from the 70’s of the past several weeks.

But snow is not expected today. At least, that is what the weather prognosticator says.

Aldridge reaches 20,000 points, Nets beat Pacers 105-98

NEW YORK (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half, reaching 20,000 for his career, to lead the Brooklyn Nets to a 105-98 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Friday night.

James Harden broke out of an early season slump with 29 points and Kevin Durant added 22 as the Nets evened their record at 3-3.

“Solid win,” Durant said, later adding the Nets “did a good job of fighting back.”

Aldridge became the 48th player in league history and the seventh active player to score 20,000 points.

Ruling: Can’t fire unvaxed workers while mandate in court

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana’s largest health system cannot fire or otherwise discipline north Louisiana employees who refuse to get vaccinated against COVID-19 while the mandate’s legality is in court, a state appeals court says.

The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeal in Shreveport ruled Thursday, just a day before Ochsner Health’s Friday deadline for its 32,000 employees across Louisiana and in a small part of Mississippi to be fully vaccinated or face dismissal.

Iowa man sentenced, appeals denied

IOWA — An Iowa man is in jail for aggravated assault with a firearm after pointing a gun at several juveniles in 2018 and threatening to kill them.

On July 21, 2018, Christopher Michael Vaccaro, 35, of Iowa, was arrested by Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office for an incident that occurred in Iowa, according to District Attorney Elliott Cassidy.

Etienne, Hebert lead Dogs to shutout of SB

LONGVILLE — An inspired Jennings Bulldog defense and the mighty Trevor Etienne led the Dogs to a 43-0 win over the South Beau Golden Knights Friday night.

The Bulldog defense, led by Khorey Hebert, stifled the Knights offense and producing multiple 3-and-outs on several occasions.

On the offensive side, it was all Etienne in multiple ways. He had five rushing touchdowns and a punt return for a score, and also a 2-point run and long pass to Clay Broussard.

Washington speaks at Welsh Rotary Club meeting

The Rotary Club of Welsh met for their weekly meeting on Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Welsh Community Center.

The guest speaker was Anthony Washington, territory manager for Veteran Exteriors. Mr. Washington shared information about their company, cleaning solutions and their five-step process.

Veteran Exteriors uses a soft washing approach instead of pressure washing. Before and after photos were shared.

Having a best friend is one of the most beautiful gifts in life, however, having a best friend during a health crisis can be critical.

Best friends Kara Monvoisin and Katharine Krielow, both of Jennings, have been “besties” since they were three years old. Together, the two friends experienced all life’s milestones, including graduating from school, getting married and having children. What they didn’t know, however, was that their friendship would carry them through one of the most trying experiences of their lives.
