LAKE ARTHUR — The Lake Arthur Police Department and Jeff Davis Parish Library are working together to ensure the library is a safe place for the community after unsavory characters took advantage of the building.

Bird flu confirmed in Louisiana backyard flock

(The Center Square) — State and federal officials have confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a backyard flock in Bossier Parish, marking the first case in domestic birds in Louisiana during the ongoing outbreak that began in February 2022.

Report: Louisiana students improved their reading proficiency in 2024

— Louisiana students in kindergarten through third grade improved their reading proficiency by 2.3 percentage points on a literacy screener given at the beginning of this school year.

Wreaths Across America

A crowd gathered from across the region at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery to adorn the gravestones of our country’s heroes. Every year, Wreaths Across America receives donations of fresh Christmas wreaths to be set in front of veteran gravestones in cemeteries across the nation and Normandy. The movement started in 2004 when a picture showed thousands of wreaths adorning the oldest graves stones at Arlington cemetery.

Miracle on South Street

The community of Welsh came together on Saturday to turn the downtown area into a winter wonderland. A parade kicked off the night with many floats throwing candy, trinkets and other fun surprises to eager residents.

Elton decks the halls

The Town of Elton hosted its annual Christmas festival over the weekend, complete with a parade down Main Street. Town officials, area royalty and local businesses, along with the Basile High and Welsh High school marching bands shared their Christmas spirit in celebration of the upcoming holiday.
