Tigers to play in NCAA Eugene Regional

BATON ROUGE — LSU received a bid on Monday to the NCAA Baseball Tournament, and the Tigers will travel to the Eugene Regional hosted by the University of Oregon.

ENID, Okla. – LSU Eunice baseball continued to fire on all cylinders as the Bengals collected a second straight mercy rule win in the NJCAA Division II World Series with an 11-2 decision over Kellogg CC in seven innings on Monday at David Allen Memorial Ballpark. With the victory, the Bengals (49-6) are now in the driver’s seat of their respective bracket and will have a day off before playing in the bracket finals on Wednesday.

Women’s track and field gets the job done at NCAA East Preliminaries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The No. 1 ranked LSU women’s track and field program added 15 more entries to the 2021 NCAA Championships to conclude the NCAA East Preliminaries on Saturday at Hodges Stadium. The LSU women will have a total of 19 entries at the NCAA meet in two weeks in Eugene, Oregon.

Tucker, Astros down former bench coach Cora, Red Sox 11-2

HOUSTON (AP) — Kyle Tucker had a season-best three hits and tied a career high with four RBIs as the Houston Astros beat former bench coach Alex Cora and the Boston Red Sox 11-2 on Monday.

This was the first time Cora, now managing the Red Sox, had faced the Astros since being suspended in 2020 for his role in Houston’s sign-stealing scheme while with the team in 2017.

Cora helped Houston win the World Series in 2017, then guided Boston to the 2018 title. He was fired by the Red Sox after his suspension, then rehired last November.

SEC matches record with 7 teams named NCAA regional hosts

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference matched its record with seven teams among 16 regional hosts announced Sunday for the NCAA baseball tournament.

The hosts have locked up spots in the national tournament, and the rest of the 64-team field will be unveiled Monday.

Each regional will be made up of four teams playing in a double-elimination format. All are scheduled from Friday through Monday. Regional winners advance to best-of-three super regionals, and those eight winners go on to the College World Series in Omaha.

Arkansas tops Tennessee 7-2 to capture first SEC title

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — The Arkansas Razorbacks polished off their dominant run through the Southeastern Conference regular season and tournament. Now, they can turn their attention to even bigger prizes.

Jalen Battles and Cullen Smith homered to help Arkansas win its first SEC Tournament title with a 7-2 victory over Tennessee on Sunday.

The Razorbacks (46-12) would have been the likely No. 1 overall national seed when the NCAA regional field is announced on Monday win or lose that game.

Cubs place RHP Williams on IL, recall Stewart to start

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed right-hander Trevor Williams on the 10-day injured list Monday, adding another name to their long list of injured players.

Williams was scheduled to start Monday against San Diego, but he had an appendectomy Sunday. Kohl Stewart was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to take Williams’ turn against the Padres.

Despite a rash of injuries, the Cubs won 12 of 16 heading into the series with San Diego. Williams, Jason Heyward, Jake Marisnick, Nico Hoerner, Matt Duffy, Alec Mills and Justin Steele have gone on the IL since May 10.

Softball falls short in game one of Super Regional

BATON ROUGE – The No. 7 LSU softball team fell in game one of the Baton Rouge Super Regional to No. 10 Florida State, 1-0, in front of more than 2,300 fans at Tiger Park Thursday night.
