BATON ROUGE (AP) — LSU freshman tight Arik Gilbert, who entered this week leading all active Tigers in receiving, has decided to opt out for the remainder of the season. LSU coach Ed Orgeron announced Gilbert’s decision on Wednesday and the coach could not say for certain whether Gilbert intended to return next season or transfer elsewhere. “Do I think we have a chance at getting him back next season? Yeah,” Orgeron said. “Is there a chance of him transferring? I don’t know that.

Lady Tigers shoot way past Iota 67-36

LAKE ARTHUR - The Lake Arthur Tigers (LA) racked up their ninth win of the season Monday night when they topped the Iota Lady Bulldogs by a final of 67-36 at “Nookie” Moore Gymnasium. LA again placed three players in double figures, and used nine 3-pointers to help guide them to the 31-point victory.

LUTCHER - About 10 minutes before the kickoff of Friday night’s 3A Regional Round Playoff game, Lutcher High School put on a dynamic fireworks display when their Bulldogs made their way out on to the field. Jennings however, saved fireworks of their own for a grand finale with 46 seconds left in the contest.

Indians move to 3-0 with 69-30 win over LA

ELTON - The Elton Indians (EHS) stayed perfect on the young season at 3-0 by knocking off the Lake Arthur Tigers (LA) by a final of 69-30 at Oris Guidry Gymnasium. The Indians used a big night from guard Sherman Bellow, as he poured in 20 points to lead his club.

Elton (3-0) sprinted out to a 22-5 lead after one period of play. Bellow led the Indians in the first with his seven points, while Damracus Jack pitched in six. Xavier Ceaser popped in five for Elton, while Maddox Pierotti added four. Ray Levi led LA with three, while Kenyon Boese added two.

LONGVILLE - The Lake Arthur Lady Tigers (LA) closed out the South Beauregard “Duel in the Dungeon” Tournament Saturday by knocking off Class B power Hicks by a final of 64-46. The win over Hicks followed a narrow loss to arguably the state’s best girls’ basketball team in Fairview. The Lady Tigers placed three players in double figures in the win over Hicks, and upped their overall record to 8-1.

Watford paces LSU blowout win over La. Tech 86-55

BATON ROUGE (AP) — Trendon Watford scored 18 points and missed just two of 12 foul shots and LSU controlled Louisiana Tech from the outset in an 86-55 win on Sunday. Javonte Smart and Cameron Thomas

Javonte Smart and Cameron Thomas each scored 16 for the Tigers (3-1), Darius Days 12 and Jalen Cook 10. LSU finished 26-for-48 (54.2%) shooting and had a 46-33 rebound advantage.

Woods, Lady Indians topple Bolton 48-25

ELTON - The Elton Lady Indians made easy work out of the Bolton Lady Bears Saturday by earning a 48-25 victory at Oris Guidry Gymnsaium.

The win moved the Lady Indians to 1-1 on then early season. Senior ULM signee Vici Woods had a big game for Elton, as she poured in 21 points and yanked down 13 rebounds.

Elton (1-1) raced out to an 18-7 lead in thn first quarter, using 10 from Woods to get things going. Nya Francis chipped in four, while Mariah Lemoine and Shaina Miller popped in two.

Hill throws 2 TD passes, Saints hold off Falcons 21-16

ATLANTA (AP) — Taysom Hill finally threw a touchdown pass.

Two of them, in fact. The New Orleans defense finally gave up a touchdown.

But not two, which ensured the Saints are headed back to the playoffs for the fourth year in a row.

Hill won another start filling in for injured Drew Brees and New Orleans got the big defensive stop it needed in the closing minutes to preserve a 21-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

The Saints (10-2) clinched a playoff berth with their ninth straight victory and Chicago’s 34-30 loss to Detroit.
