Dogs to open season against talented Leesville

The Jennings Bulldogs will kick off their regular season this Friday night at Jerry Simmons Stadium by facing 4A power Leesville in a highly anticipated contest. The Wampus Cats finished the 2018 season an impressive 13-1, coming one win shy of reaching the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. However, like a lot of teams around the area, Leesville is searching for players to replace seniors from last year’s squad. Leesville opened last week in jamboree action with perennial 2A power Many and tied 15-15 with the Tigers in 24 minutes of football.

Welsh seeking to cut down mistakes in clash with 4A Wolves

WELSH - The Welsh Greyhounds and the Lake Arthur Tigers already have something in common this early in the football season. Both are searching for a new tailback after losing their starter to injury. Welsh’s junior starter Jaheim Simon injured a knee in the jamboree and his participation for the remainder of the year is in question.

Welsh first year head coach Cody Gueringer will go to the platoon system to find a replacement for Simon.

Tigers to tangle with Bearcats without Levias

LAKE ARTHUR - The Lake Arthur Tigers are faced with a dilemma that does not directly involve this week’s opponent, the Basile Bearcats. The big question in Tigerland this week is who will take the place of the injured Torrell Levias at tailback in the split-veer attack of the Tigers.

Levias suffered a lower leg injury near the end of Lake Arthur’s jamboree contest against Erath, and now head coach Mark Deshotel must work out a replacement at the position.

Indians aiming to kick off 2019 on right foot

ELTON - Coming off a jamboree win over Abbeville’s junior varsity 22-8, the Elton Indians will now open the season on the road against the 2A Oakdale Warriors Friday night. The Warriors are a new face on the Indians’ schedule this season, and also bring a new coaching staff to the program which hasn’t had a winning season since 2011.

The Jennings Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to the Iowa Yellow Jackets 10-7 on a 67-yard TD pass with 50 seconds left on the clock in the second half at the Bubba Oustalet/ Jennings High School Jamboree Thursday night. The Dogs were clinging to a 7-3 advantage with just under a minute to go on third-and-long, however a long throw-and-catch led to the Jackets ultimately snatching victory from defeat.

Hounds suffer tough defeat, possible loss of Simon

JENNINGS - The Welsh Greyhounds lost more than a football game here Thursday night. Junior tailback Jaheim Simon fell victim to a knee injury in the second half of the contest against the South Beauregard Knights and his status for the remainder of the season is very much in doubt.

The Knights did prevail in the abbreviated contest, as Britton Coleman booted a 22-yard field goal as time expired to hand South Beauregard an 10-7 win. Simon was the workhorse for the Greyhounds, as he rushed for 85 yards on 14 carries before the injury.

Tigers fall to 3A Erath 14-7 in Acadia/Vermillion Jamboree

CROWLEY - The Lake Arthur Tigers took on the class 3-A Erath Bobcats in the Crowley Jamboree Thursday night and dropped a tough 14-7 decision to the Bobcats. Tiger Head Coach Mark Deshotel was pleased with the overall play of his squad in the abbreviated contest. “We really had opportunities to win this game,” commented Deshotel. “We had several drives that got us inside their 10 yard line but we couldn’t get in the end zone. We had an interception that killed one chance and penalties that stopped the other drive.”

Etienne’s three TD’s lead Clemson to 52-14 thrashing of Ga. Tech

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Travis Etienne spent all offseason trying to ignore the national attention headed his way. He’ll have a harder time doing that after the show he put on in No. 1 Clemson’s opener.

Etienne, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, rushed for a career-high 205 yards and three touchdowns, including one from 90 yards out, as the Tigers overpowered Georgia Tech 52-14 Thursday night for their 16th straight victory in the opener for both ACC teams.

Indians blast Abbeville JV 22-8 in Herpin Jamboree

GUEYDAN - The Elton Indians got into the win column Thursday night as they hammered the Abbeville junior varsity 22-8 in the final game of the Luddy Herpin Jamboree at Gueydan High School.

Elton jumped out to a 16-0 lead midway through the second half before giving up a 34-yard TD run to the Wildcats, but answered back with another score to make the final 22-8.
