LAKE ARTHUR – The Lake Arthur Tigers looked dominant in their 52-0 preseason scrimmage win over the Delcambre Panthers last Friday night, however, they will get a bigger test this Thursday when they tangle with the Erath Bobcats at Crowley High School. Tigers Head Coach Mark Deshotel said he was pleased about the effort he saw from his team last week, but discussed a few areas that are still in question heading into jamboree week.

ELTON – After facing one of the tougher scrimmages in the area last week by traveling to defending 2A runner-up Welsh, the Elton Indians will look to correct some mistakes heading into the their week one battle with the Oakdale Warriors. This Thursday, Elton will travel to Gueydan to square off with Abbeville’s junior varsity at 7:30 p.m. in the Luddy Herpin Jamboree.

Although the Indians didn’t find the endzone against Welsh in their 17-0 loss, Head Coach Donnie Bruchhaus said after watching the film he saw a lot of correctable things.

Prep sports participation drops, led by decline in football

(AP) - Led by a decline in football for the fifth straight year, participation in U.S. high school sports dropped in 2018-19 for the first time in 30 years, according to an annual survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

The 2018-19 total of 7,937,491 participants was a decline of 43,395 from the 2017-18 school year, when the number of participants in high school sports reached a record high of 7,980,886.

The last decline in sports participation numbers occurred during the 1988-89 school year.

The Jennings Bulldogs and Welsh Greyhounds will showcase their final tune-up here at Jerry Simmons Stadium Thursday evening at the Jennings Jamboree. The Hounds will do battle with the South Beauregard Golden Knights at 5:30 p.m., while the Bulldogs will test fellow district rival Iowa immediately following the conclusion of the first contest. Both Welsh and Jennings have competed in the larger Sulphur Jamboree over the past few seasons, however the move seems more fitting to keep things inside the parish.
