LAKE ARTHUR – After not having a single baseball player from the school sign a college letter of intent in over 20 years, Lake Arthur High School added its second in one season over the week when recently graduated third baseman Jarron Whitman inked to continue his career at Richland College in Dallas, Texas. Whitman, who was an All-District and All-Parish slugging infielder, sealed the deal after working out for Richland Head Coach Guy Simmons in Dallas on Monday.

YOUNGSVILLE – The Big Maroon Train kept on rolling in its opening game of the Bronco Super Regional Tournament held at the Youngsville Sports Complex, as they destroyed the Iberia American All-Stars by a final of 18-8 in a run-rule stopped contest. Jennings used an 8-run bottom of the first inning to put things away, and elected to save their starting pitching for later in the long weekend by using Baylor Griffith for only an inning after jumping out to the huge advantage.

The Jennings Bronco All-Stars punched their ticket to the PONY Bronco League Super Regional Tournament in Youngsville later this week by sweeping through the Jennings Section with a 2-0 record. After defeating North Vermilion Thursday night by a count of 9-2, Jennings captured the tournament title by blanking Port Barre by a final of 10-0 in the winners bracket finals on Saturday. Port Barre went on to defeat North Vermilion to capture the second spot to advance to Youngsville, but forfeited the championship game set for Sunday morning to Jennings.

Helmet maker rounds out football portfolio with new headgear

SEATTLE (AP) — The company that produces the top-rated helmet for NFL players and introduced a youth version of the headgear is rolling out a version for flag football.

Seattle-based VICIS already produces the helmet that rated best for three straight years at reducing head impact severity, according to testing conducted by the NFL and the NFLPA. The company unveiled a youth version of the helmet last year with an influx of funding, including contributions from Aaron Rodgers.

The Jennings Bronco All-Stars got off to a hot start to their Section Tournament Thursday night by defeating North Vermilion 9-2 in the nightcap of a doubleheader. Port Barre defeated Lydia by a final of 9-2 in the first game of the four-team bracket. Jennings used a big night by slugger Ryan Reed at the plate to catapult the hosts to a winners bracket game against Port Barre set for 8 pm Friday night.

Friendship strikes through Buddy Ball organization

Logan Atkins (Senior) and recently graduated Morgan Herpin created a friendship in a high school geography class that inspired the newly formed Friend2Friend organization, which hosts “Bulldog Buddyball.”

Atkins who had a rough start to his high school career was seen as distant to most students, but two years ago when Junior cheerleader Morgan Herpin decided to reach out to offer help to Logan on a map project in class, his school days changed drastically.
