There are 6,745 voters of Jeff Davis parish that made themselves eligible to vote in any election, which might be called during 1,937 by getting the free poll tax receipts from the office of Sheriff Gus Broussard prior to closing of the books at midnight, December 31.

Grim Search Still On For More Bodies

An unofficial death toll estimate today was set at about 350 persons lost in Hurricane Audrey along the Gulf Coast. The grim task of locating the missing and known dead is still underway in Cameron parish and parts of Vermillion parish.

Many of the bodies being brought in to rescue centers are to be buried unidentified in a mass burial. Others are being buried in individual rites throughout the area. Some were buried near the locations of their deaths by grieving husbands, sons and fathers.

Freak baby tornado touches down

Tuesday, May 21, 1946

A freak baby tornado swooped down on the poultry yards of Earl Necessary at the W.F. Humphrey's residence on Cary Ave., Friday midnight. The freak wind cut a swath ten feet wide and 500 feet long and this was the only damage reported to Jennings. But, it did this:

It overturned a small poultry house, but chickens remained on their roosts unmolested and unharmed.

It picked up a five pound stone and dropped it ten feet away.

It demolished a coop and wire runway.

Work begins on Jennings filling station

Work began on a filling station for the Jennings Motor Car Co. The building is to be on the lot just south of the Jennings Motor Car Co. on the corner of Main and Nezpique.

The building is to be of brick with tile roof, and entrances to both streets.

Two contractors are at work and Mr. Houssiere states that he hopes to have it competed within the next 30 days.
