Louella ‘Lou’ Bertrand Marcantel
LAKE ARTHUR - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Louella “Lou” Bertrand Marcantel at Our Lady of The Lake Church in Lake Arthur on Friday, March 22, 2019, at 10 a.m., with Msgr. Ronald Groth and Father Susil Fernando officiating.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Lake Arthur today, Thursday, March 21, 2019, from 4-8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume on Friday, March 22, 2019, from 8 a.m. until the time of her funeral mass.
Louella “Lou” Bertrand Marcantel was born to Velma Marceaux Bertrand and Clifton “Bee” Bertrand on June 18, 1947 of Gueydan. Lou was one of eight children, Dolores B. Conner (Earl) of Pine Island(deceased), Mary Alice B. Derouen (Larry) of Welsh, Lois Jeanelle Bertrand of Dallas, Texas (deceased), Malton J. Bertrand of Gueydan, Carolyn B. Hanks of Gueydan (deceased) and Travis Bertrand ( Annette) of New Mexico. Lou had two children from her first marriage to Leslie L. Burkholder of Sulphur, Dawn Mary Picard (Jeffery) of Sunset and and Tony Lee Burkholder (Cynthia) of Geismar.
She was married to the love of her life, Robert “Ray” Marcantel, in 1982. Ray was elected Chief of Police in Lake Arthur and served in that position until the time of his death.
Lou and Ray moved to Lake Arthur from Brookhaven, Miss., in 1997. They became active members of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Lou and Ray served as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion and Lou also served as a lector. She was involved in both the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters. She was a catechism teacher and helped her husband in his membership of the Knights of Columbus. She was past president of East Deanery Serra Club. She was also a wedding coordinator for the parish.
Besides her children Dawn and Tony, she raised her first granddaughter, Whitney Lee Burkholder, and is survived by two other grandchildren, Grace Mary and Merlin Lee Burkholder.
Pallbearers will be Tony Burkholder, Merlin Burkholder, Travis Bertrand, Jeffery Picard, Kermit Sonnier and Ray Allen Matt.
