Velma G. Smith
A Mass of Christian burial for Velma G. Smith, 90, of Basile will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Evangeline today, Friday, Oct. 12, 2018, at 11 a.m., with Father Paul LaFleur officiating.
Visitation was held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home in Jennings on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, from 2-9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6 p.m. by Brandi Smith. Visitation will resume today, Friday, Oct. 12, from 8 a.m. until the time of her funeral Mass.
Velma will be laid to rest in Reed Cemetery.
Velma was born in Elton on May 28, 1928, to Adley Guillory and Eva Clement Guillory. She was called to her Heavenly Father on Oct. 10, 2018. Velma worked as a caretaker for Southwest Louisiana State School. She loved to cook, bake and read books. Most of all, Velma loved spending time with her family, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great greatgrandchildren. Velma was a kind and loving person and she will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Velma is survived by her two sons, Stephen Smith (Sharon) of Lafayette and Carlos Smith (Brenda) of Tee Mamou; her four daughters, Carla Bergeaux (Kenneth) of Tee Mamou, Brenda Trahan of Tee Mamou, Melissa Suire (Olen) of Georgia and Colleen Jannise of Tee Mamou; her 14 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Adley and Eva Guillory; her husband, Leon G. Smith; her son, Charles Smith; her grandson, Travis Smith; her son-inlaw, Steven Trahan; and her sister, Margaret Langley.
Carrying Velma to her final resting place in Reed Cemetery will be Jason Smith, Eric Smith, Ryan Smith, Adam Smith, Leon Trahan, and Andrew Jannise. Matthew Smith will be an honorary pallbearer.
