Activities planned in honor of MLK
The Martin Luther King, Jr. and Black History Committee of Jennings have planned several activities in observance of the civil rights activist who greatly impacted the lives of Americans.
“To kick off the events, we will hold an afternoon service in honor of Dr. King Sunday, Feb. 20, at 5:30 p.m. at Union Baptist Church,” said committee Steering Chairman Don Broussard.
Union Baptist is located at 1014 S. Main St. Monday, Feb. 21, the organization has a 5K run planned, with registration at 7 a.m. and the run beginning at 8 a.m.
Following the race, a breakfast will be served at 9:30 a.m. at Union Baptist. “Due to predictions of inclement weather, a parade that was originally planned for Saturday morning has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. Monday,” said Broussard. “Lineup will be from 9:20-9:45 a.m. and will take place at the corner of Market Street and South Main Street near Hayes Cleaners.”
The church will then hold a breakout session starting at 10:15 a.m. that will cover several topics. “Of course we will discuss King but other important areas discussed will be social media, education and poverty,” said Broussard. “Emergency personnel will have short presentations prepared for the children as well.”
Broussard said there would also be free blood pressure checks and other health-related information to share with those in attendance. “At 11:30 a.m. we will take part in a bell-ringing ceremony and our day will conclude by noon,” said Broussard. He said the public is invited to attend and there will be no charge to participate in any of the activities.
