Today’s home fires burn faster than ever. In a typical fire, one may have as little as one to two minutes to escape safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds.

The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) has deemed October 7-13 as National Fire Prevention Week and local fire departments across the U.S. are working to educate the public on fire prevention.

Sex offender charged with molestation of juvenile

An Elton man is being charged for providing drugs and engaging in inappropriate physical contact with a juvenile.

On Wednesday, Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office (JDSO) detectives interviewed the mother of a juvenile. The mother reported that her daughter had been given drugs

by an adult living in the same residence.

Detectives interviewed the juvenile, who confirmed the information reported by her mother, as well as and additional information about inappropriate behavior and physical contact with the subject.

JHS Crowns Homecoming Queen

Jennings senior Sydnee Brown was crowned Homecoming Queen at halftime of the school’s Homecoming Game against Westlake Friday Night. Sydnee is the daughter of Dwayne and Shana Brown. Tyrannie Withers was named Maid of Honor during festivities. The senior is the daughter of Tyrone Withers and Jamie Pete.

Basile Overcomes Indians 49-20

The Westlake Rams came into Jerry Simmons Stadium Friday night and spoiled Homecoming festivities for a packed house, as they slipped past the Bulldogs by a final of 21-14 on a brisk October evening. Despite their 1-5 mark entering the contest with the No. 5 Bulldogs, Westlake played like a possessed team most of the evening to earn their second win. The Rams grabbed a 14-0 lead at halftime, withstood a Jennings second-half rally and added a fourth-quarter kick-off return for a score to earn the hard fought victory.

Hounds Claim Victory over LA 55-20

The Welsh Greyhounds rode into Jack Doland Stadium Friday night and reeled off an impressive 55-20 win over the No. 3 Lake Arthur Tigers to open 6-2A play. The Hounds move to 5-2 overall, 1-0 in league play, while the Tigers dropped to 5-2 overall, 1-1 in 6-2A action. Alumni Tournament Committee Donates to Bulldog Athletics

The Jennings Alumni Tournament Committee donated $13,000 at halftime of the Welsh game to JHS Principal Wilbert Guilbeaux for Bulldog Athletics. The money will be used for upgrades to the weight room at JHS in memory of longtime Bulldog supporter Ronnie Demerit. Pictured from left are: Jeff Person, Jimmy Segura, Mike Gary, JHS Principal Wilbert Guilbeaux and Shawn Demerit, who was on hand in memory of his father.

Bulldogs Slip Past Church Point 15-12

The No. 1-ranked Iota Bulldogs stayed unbeaten Friday night by slipping past No. 3 Church Point, 15-12 at Bulldog Stadium. The Dogs moved to 7-0 overall, 4-0 in leaguer play, while the Bears dropped to 5-2 overall, 2-2 in league action. Benoit combined for 267 yards of total offense in Welsh’s 34-30 win over the Jennings Bulldogs in week six. Benoit threw the pigskin for 141 yards and three TD’s, while also rushing for 126 stripes. The senior quarterback hit receiver Dylan Degeyter for an 11-yard scoring pass with only nine seconds left to go in regulation to secure the win.

American Legion post pays tribute to namesake

On Oct. 2, 2018, American Legion Post 19, Department of Louisiana, from Jennings conducted a memorial service at the gravesite of its namesake, Captain James O. Hall, who made the supreme sacrifice for his country on October 2, 1918, during World War I. CPT Hall is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings. During the ceremony Post 19 Commander Horace Naquin (left of wreath) and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Unit 19 Secretary Gayle McFarlain (right of wreath) laid a wreath at CPT Hall’s grave.
