in the southern United States, General John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the north. As commanderin- chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, General Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan preferred the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.

1906 - Memorial Day was founded so that there might be a few hours in each year set aside for the appropriate commemoration of the deeds of men who had been killed while serving our country in the military or who had died since having served. For a number of years, it was generally and suitably observed.

Memorial Day Originally called Decoration Day, it was formalized by a “Memorial Day Order” . It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868 to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former Union sailors and soldiers. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30. Since 1971, it is observed on the last Monday of May.

Missing Women Found Murdered in evangeline pit

1942 - A badly decomposed corpse was located weighted down in an Evangeline pit. Claude Myers discovered the body while picking berries in a thicket. The body of Mrs Alzima Claude, 55 year old resident of Evangeline, was found Sunday three miles north of the oil town, ending a 25 day search for the woman who on April 29 left her home to pick mayhaws. Weighted down by at least one sack of concrete tied with binder twine, the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, and was found partly floating in the pit by Claude Myers, a resident of the Evangeline section, as he walked through the woods hunting blackberries.

President Woodrow Wilson, on Saturday, May 9, 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day a national observance to be held each year on the second Sunday of May, thereby making May 10, 1914 the first national Mother’s Day. The observance was to take the form of displaying the American Flag on government buildings and private homes “as a public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country.”

1940- To accomodate patrons, especially housewives. the Strand Theatre, announced today that week- day shows would start promptly at 3 o’clock daily. “ The doors will open at 2: 45 p. m.” Billy Richardson, manager, stated. This will allow patrons time to see the afternoon performance and shop for their evening meal before the stores close in the afternoon.
