NO TRASH COLLECTION THURSDAY

Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn reminded residents that Republic will not be working on Thursday, Nov. 22 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. That means all Jennings residents who normally see their trash collected on Thursday will instead have their trash picked up on Friday, Nov. 23. Meanwhile, Friday customers are reminded that their trash will be collected on Saturday. Residents who see trash collection on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays will not be affected.

LHS, HHS LAND MATTERS UPDATED

The Jeff Davis school board provided updates this week on land purchases connected to two schools.

School board denies survey request

Jeff Davis Parish School Board has denied an environmental survey request after representatives for Vestas and Steelhead Americas, LLC failed to attend a planned meeting.

“If they can’t find the time for us, then I say that we vote no and drop this,” said Don Dees, who represents District 5. District 12 member Jason Bouley seconded the motion.

After two years at the helm of the Zigler Art Museum (ZAM) in Jennings, Director Celia Joe Black says she is proud to be able to help to provide a space in her hometown that promotes culture and fine art.

“The Zigler Art Museum’s vision is to help local artists and promote local culture,” Black said. “Through our many classes, local exhibits and programs aimed at outreach and education in the community, we are able to fulfill our mission.”

COA seminar addresses holiday depression

Jeff Davis Council on Aging (COA) held a seminar Thursday that gave area seniors a few tips to cope with negative feelings that often arise during Thanksgiving and Christmas festivities.

Laura Guidry, business development liaison with Vermilion Behavioral Health Systems, was the guest speaker. She said her mission was to help break down the stigma associated with mental health. Such stigma often makes it difficult for seniors to openly discuss their feelings.

Hounds claim 33-16 win over Mansfield

The Welsh Greyhounds took on the Mansfield Wolverines Friday at Greyhound Stadium in the Regional round of the Class 2A playoffs. In what was a rather shaky game for both teams in all four quarters, Welsh managed to come out on top 33-16. The Greyhounds will face DeQuincy next week in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs at DeQuincy.

The Greyhounds won the opening toss and elected to defer. Mansfield received the ball at their own 20 and returned it to 39 to give themselves decent field position to start the game.

Iota Lady Dogs hold off JHS Lady Bulldogs

The Iota Lady Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run to start the second quarter that erased an early deficit and helped lead them to a 48-43 victory over the Lady Dogs of Jennings here Thursday evening in a battle of former district rivals.

Jennings (0-2) shot out to a quick 11-6 lead after forcing Iota into a handful of turnovers, turning them into points in transitions on easy baskets Kyla Chambers and Tyrannie Wither.
