Charles Sonnier of Jennings was a 17-year-old high school senior when he made the decision to join the military.
In December 1953, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. After finishing school the following May, he decided to join the U.S. Marine Corps.
“My graduation ceremony from the National Guard was on a Wednesday or Thursday of that week and by Sunday, I was in Parris Island in South Carolina for boot camp,” he said. “I left quickly.”
While he enjoyed his time in the National Guard, for a longterm commitment in a combat outfit, he wanted to be a Marine.
