Watch out for washouts

The current rainy season has Jeff Davis Police Jury employees busy working to maintain the quality of gravel roads all across the parish.

Parish Roads Administrator Randy Ringuet said that due to excessive rain, some of the parish’s gravel roads have been compromised by washouts. A washout is the sudden erosion of the roadbed by a gush of flowing water, usually occurring during a heavy downpour of rain or flash flood.

MERMENTAU - As part of an ongoing effort to keep fish plentiful for generations to come, approximately 500 Florida bass fingerlings were released from the Mermentau Landing.

State Representative Johnny Guinn, professional angler Dennis Tietje and the Bayou Bass Angler’s Club assisted biologist manager Kristi Butler of the Booker Fowler Fish Hatchery as she brought the fish to their new home on Friday afternoon.

The new expansion of the Gator Chateau saw over 200 visitors within the first two hours of opening its doors to the public on Friday. Robbery suspects arrested in Welsh

WELSH - Three suspects are currently in custody in Welsh who are also believed to be responsible for a string of robberies in the surrounding areas over the last several weeks.

Early Sunday morning, Detective Matt Doucet said Welsh Police Department officers received a call in reference to a robbery in progress at the Valero located on North Adams Street near Interstate 10 in Welsh.

City, parish library join to promote youth education

The City of Jennings and the Jefferson Davis Parish Libraries have joined forces to help promote and encourage education for the city’s youth.

The purpose of the joint agreement will be to further the children’s education through the library’s reading program.

“We have always provided certificates and prizes as an incentive to get children reading,” said Director of Libraries Clare Coleman. “This year we wanted to add something that also promoted healthy living.”

Bid to rework La. property tax break falls short

BATON ROUGE (AP) — The state House on Monday fell three votes short of approving legislation backed by Louisiana’s business lobby to lessen local government decisionmaking authority over a lucrative property tax break for manufacturers.

The House voted 50-44 for the bill, but it required 53 votes to pass.

Republican Rep. Rick Edmonds had proposed to rework the rules for the 80-year-old Industrial Tax Exemption Program, which gives approved manufacturing facilities exemptions from paying local property taxes for up to 10 years.

ORLANDO, Fla. – LSU Senior Jessica Golovin and sophomore Eden Richardson fell in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Women’s Tennis Singles Tournament on Monday, May 20, at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
