Homeschool students now allowed in fair queen pageant

Two additional ladies will be vying for the fair queen crown this year now that qualifying homeschool students can compete in the annual contest.

Contest coordinator Brandy LaBouve said the Jeff Davis Parish Fair Board approved the request from parents of homeschool students in a meeting last year.

“We have some students who reside in this parish and receive their education in this parish, but they learn in a homeschool setting instead of at one of our schools,” she said.

The Jennings Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to the Iowa Yellow Jackets 10-7 on a 67-yard TD pass with 50 seconds left on the clock in the second half at the Bubba Oustalet/ Jennings High School Jamboree Thursday night. The Dogs were clinging to a 7-3 advantage with just under a minute to go on third-and-long, however a long throw-and-catch led to the Jackets ultimately snatching victory from defeat.

BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — Federal funding has been awarded to Mississippi to support the return of passenger rail service between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama, the secretary of U.S. Department of Transportation said Thursday.

Thornwell street dance gains festival status

The Jeff Davis Police Jury reached a decision this week on a request to officially declare the Thornwell Harvest Street Dance a festival.

In June, organizers approached the police jury looking to obtain festival status, saying it would help them obtain local and state grants and attract more visitors into the parish. At the time, police jury president Donald Woods asked that the police jurors have more time to research issues such as liability insurance before making a decision.

Stocks power on, heading for strong finish to volatile month

(AP) - Stocks climbed broadly on Wall Street in early trading Friday as the market extended a recent rally and closed in on a big weekly gain after four straight weeks of losses.

Despite marching higher most of this week, the market is on track to finish August with a loss. That would be only the second monthly decline this year after May.

Technology companies and banks did the most to lift major indexes. Intel rose 1.8 percent and Citigroup added 1.2 percent.

Hounds suffer tough defeat, possible loss of Simon

JENNINGS - The Welsh Greyhounds lost more than a football game here Thursday night. Junior tailback Jaheim Simon fell victim to a knee injury in the second half of the contest against the South Beauregard Knights and his status for the remainder of the season is very much in doubt.

The Knights did prevail in the abbreviated contest, as Britton Coleman booted a 22-yard field goal as time expired to hand South Beauregard an 10-7 win. Simon was the workhorse for the Greyhounds, as he rushed for 85 yards on 14 carries before the injury.

JDN OFFICE CLOSED MONDAY

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the Jennings Daily News office will be closed Monday, Sept. 2. Because of this, there will be no newspaper published Tuesday, Sept. 3.
