Shortly before Congress adjourned for its summer break, what it aggrandizingly likes to refer to as “constituent work days,” the House of Representatives passed a horrible immigration bill.

Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.), who never met a bill to expand the foreignborn labor pool at American workers’ expense she didn’t lovingly embrace, championed the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act, urging her colleagues to vote for the bill which she claimed would make a “modest, but important change to our immigration laws.”

Breed-specific bans are ineffective

Village officials in Fenton are making an antiquated and unwarranted decision to ban specific breeds of dogs from the municipal limits.

A proposed ordinance would include added language around the definition of pit bull, and would also ban these types of dogs from being kept within the city limits.

Get registered to vote today

This fall voters in Jeff Davis will have to chance to select new state legislators, as well as decide on several police jury seats and constitutional amendments.

The Jeff Davis Registrar of Voters sent out a reminder this week that the voter registration deadline for the Saturday, Oct. 12 Gubernatorial Primary Election is Sept. 11 in person and Sept. 21 online.

Voting is a tool that we have at our disposal to protect and maintain our freedom to live as we choose.

Two arrested for bomb threat, vehicle theft

ELTON - An Elton man is currently in custody after threatening to blow up his vehicle and the rice dryer here.

Jeff Davis Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Chris Ivey said deputies responded to a call of a bomb threat at 812 Main Street in Elton Friday evening.

Scott Gregory Miller, 49, of Elton, was determined to be the suspect, who told sheriff’s deputies that he had wired explosives at the rice dryer, as well as throughout his vehicle.

Jennings Animal Shelter to host adoption day

With the shelter over capacity, officials are hoping to find furever homes for some of its residents by hosting an adoption day on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Of the 20 kennels available at the shelter, presently none of them are empty.

“All of the kennels are filled. A few of them are currently housing two dogs each,” said Animal Control Officer Chelsi Leger. “I have dogs of all sizes and breeds. I have adult dogs and younger dogs. We really need to find homes for these animals.”

Leger said she is excited for the upcoming adoption day.

Navarre retires from JFD

After serving his department for the many years in various capacities, Captain Johnny Navarre is hanging up his helmet.

On Monday, Navarre was recognized by his brothers and sisters at the fire department. Family and friends gathered to enjoy a barbecue in his honor.

Fire Chief Bobby Vasseur presented Navarre his helmet signed by everyone in the department along with a plaque in appreciation for his service and dedication over the years.

McNeese State University will be coming to Jennings with a free workshop for entrepreneurs who are interested in starting, growing and expanding a business. The workshop, titled “Starting and Financing
