Over 1.5 billion people globally asked to stay home to escape virus

PARIS (AP) — The hunt for masks, ventilators and other medical supplies consumed the U.S. and Europe, as more than 1.5 billion people — one-fifth of the world’s population — were asked or ordered to stay home on Monday to try to blunt the spread of the coronavirus.

Congress, White House struggle to complete $2T economic rescue package

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump expressed qualms Monday about extending the current 15-day shutdown recommended by the federal government, even as his officials warned that the coronavirus crisis is deepening and Congress and the White House struggle to complete a nearly $2 trillion economic rescue package.

Feeding program kicks off

Jeff Davis Parish student feeding sites were underway Monday at Welsh Elementary and other schools despite Governor John Bel Edwards’ stay-at-home order. Parish Superintendent of Schools Kirk Credeur said at press time that he had not received any word from the state that the feeding programs would not be allowed under the current order. The program is a “grab and go” setup that allows students ages 2-18, or up to 22 with certain disabilities, to pick up a lunch and breakfast weekdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at sites including Welsh Elementary, Elton High, Jennings High, Union Baptist Church in Jennings and Lake Arthur Elementary.
