CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The Great Barrier Reef is facing a critical period of heat stress over the coming weeks following the most widespread coral bleaching the natural wonder has ever endured, scientists said Friday.

David Wachenfeld, chief scientist at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the government agency that manages the coral expanse off northeast Australia, said ocean temperatures over the next month will be crucial to how the reef recovers from heat-induced bleaching.

Twenty-eight people were booked into the parish jail by the Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office over the past week.

Donald Ray Ashford, 47, of Jennings, was charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and illegal carrying/discharge of weapons.

There promises to be considerable controversy over the case of the Town of Jennings vs. Chas. Deimer, which was decided Tuesday against Deimer. The case has been appealed to the district court.

Deimer was charged with selling whiskey, and sentenced to pay fines of $25 and costs or to remain imprisoned in the town jail for a period of thirty days.

Five alleged ex-convicts who made the mass robbery of 42,000 gallons of gasoline coupons from local bulk stations ten days ago will be returned here for trial, Sheriff Azenor Buller said today.

The sheriff was successful in gaining the extradition of the quintet and both Governor James Davis of Louisiana and Governor Coke Stevenson of Texas have signed the papers. Deputies Elmer Conner and George Speight left today for Houston to return the five men who were arrested there with a large quantity of the gas ration coupons stolen from the local bulk stations.
