(AP) - Amber Dean had recovered from a mild bout of the coronavirus and her family of five had just ended their home quarantine when her oldest son, 9-year-old Bobby, fell ill.

“At first it was nothing major, it seemed like a tummy bug, like he ate something that didn’t agree with him,” said Dean, who lives with her husband and three young children in the western New York town of Hornell. “But by the next day, he couldn’t keep anything down and his belly hurt so bad he couldn’t sit up.”

I bought a green recipe file when I entered the ninth grade. It was a generic, metal file, necessary for home economics class. It probably cost less than a dollar at V. J. Elmore’s Five & Dime.

The usual suspects went into the file: Blonde Brownies, Spaghetti with Meat Sauce, Hot Chocolate, Sloppy Joes with Pickles. Those were the recipes we students prepared in and out of class, eating—or refusing to eat—our experiments in the kitchen.

Salons to reopen under strict guidelines

Stylist and salon owner Brandy Labouve is accustomed to seeing 10-18 clients per day. Under stay-at-home orders she has not worked since March 23, and when she does reopen for business Friday, she figures she will only be able to take six clients per day.

“We have to disinfect everything, from tools to chairs to capes, then allow the cleaner to sit for 20-30 minutes,” she said. “On top of this, each stylist can only serve one client at a time. So if I have someone waiting for their hair color to process, I can’t even bring in another client for a quick haircut.”

The Golden Age of Welsh Nursing Home residents were honored with a drive-through parade Tuesday afternoon. Family, friends, and other community members made signs to support their loved ones, who they have not been able to visit in person since mid-March. 

Marcus Cain Park project ‘substantially complete’

Marcus Cain Memorial Park has been declared substantially complete, with only a few minor details left on the project.

The park, located on Peters Street, will be home to one of the largest pavilions in the parish.

“We only have a few minor touches left like putting sod around the facility and hanging the basketball goals,” said Jennings Mayor Henry Guinn.

A ribbon cutting and grand opening was originally scheduled for May during the Down Home Reunion, however, that event has been canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Choosing a career in law enforcement can be rewarding in many ways. Their job is to serve and protect but along with that duty comes much, much more.

Nathaniel “Nate” Anderson said he was always interested in becoming an officer of the law. He made his decision to pursue that dream in July 2014.

“I began as a reserve officer to see if I would enjoy it,” said Anderson. “I did.”

He said he liked it so much, within one month of reserve work, he quit his full-time to job to join the police force.

Over the years, Anderson said he has served in many capacities.

Hathaway Little League to host barbecue fundraiser

Although things will not be done the same as years before, the Hathaway Little League will still host their barbecue burger fundraiser on Sunday, May 17.

“We are raising money to support both the baseball league and our Lil’ Dribblers,” said organizer Cody Guidry. “The cost will be $6 and that will include a burger and a drink.”

The event will take place at the baseball concession stand, located across the street from Hathaway High School.

Serving will begin at 11 a.m. and will be done using a drive through method.
