Twenty-six LSU track and field athetes receive All-SEC honors

BATON ROUGE – Twenty Six LSU Track and Field athletes were honored by the conference for their performances at the SEC Championships. Eleven of those athletes (6 women, 5 men) were named First Team All-SEC for winning the championship in their respective events.

Orioles’ Chris Davis out for season after hip surgery

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis will miss the rest of the season after surgery Wednesday to repair the labrum in his left hip.

The 35-year-old has not played since Baltimore’s spring training opener in February and will be sidelined for four-to-five months. General manager Mike Elias said Davis should be able to make a full return for spring training in 2022, the final season of Davis’ $161 million, seven-year contract. Davis reported pain in his lower back and hip in spring training, when he took only two at-bats.

Customs and Border Protection isn’t returning or detaining illegal migrant crossers, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement isn’t removing aliens from the interior, including convicted, released criminals.

The inevitable result: a huge U.S. population surge that will help create a chaotic society which will struggle to keep up with deteriorating conditions. From the sudden, unanticipated population growth, there will be maximum strain on K-12 education, health care, public safety and other social services which can barely provide for existing residents.

LSU AgCenter: It’s the termite swarming time of year

In Louisiana, termites tend to begin swarming the closer it gets to Mother’s Day.

LSU AgCenter urban entomologist Qian “Karen” Sun says beginning in late April and going through June, termite alates, or swarmers, will be congregating around lights after dark.

“When Mother’s Day is celebrated, it is also the time of the year when the Formosan subterranean termites swarm and spread their colonies,” she said. “The swarm peak in early to mid-May.”

Cardinals move to full capacity at Busch Stadium on June 14

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The Cardinals will return to full capacity at Busch Stadium starting with a June 14 game against Miami. St. Louis dropped its mask requirement for fully vaccinated fans on May 14.

The Cardinals will continue to have limited seating in pods for home games through June 9. Only Texas among the 30 major league teams began this season at 100 percent after fans weren’t permitted last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Harvey Rabbit kicks off library’s Summer Reading Program

The Harvey Rabbit and Friends Show will be kicking off the Jeff Davis Parish Library Summer Reading Program.

“We’re kicking off with Harvey Rabbit, a local favorite, but we also have new acts from farther away,” said Library Director Clare Coleman.

On June 2, they will perform at 10 a.m. at the Elton Library and 2 p.m. at the Jennings Strand Theatre. On June 3, they will perform at 10 a.m. at the Welsh Library and 2 p.m. at the Lake Arthur Community Center.

The class of 2021 at Jennings High School were seen off Tuesday night during a graduation ceremony.

The ceremony took place on Tuesday, May 18, in the Jeannette and Lou Gaudet Gymnasium.

The class colors were maroon and white and the class flowers were red and white roses. The class motto was “This wasn’t like High School Musical at all.” The class song was “You’re Gonna Miss This” by Trace Atkins.

Graduates completing high school with a 4.0 average included Conner Cassidy, Kenadie Cummings, Halle Davis, Morgan Futch, Noah Scarborough and Briannah Stansberry.
