South Dakota AG gets fines, no jail time in pedestrian death

FORT PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg pleaded no contest Thursday to a pair of misdemeanor traffic charges over a crash last year that killed a pedestrian, avoiding jail time despite bitter complaints from the victim’s family that he was being too lightly punished for actions they called “inexcusable.” Circuit Judge John Brown had little leeway to order jail time. Instead, he fined the state’s highest law enforcement official $500 for each of the two counts and ordered him to pay court costs of $3,742.

Etienne Jr. suffers season-ending injury in New Orleans

The Jacksonville Jaguars have lost one of their 2021 firstround picks for the entire season. During their preseason matchup against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night, rookie running back Travis Etienne suffered a serious Lisfranc injury that will end his season before it could begin, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. It was originally thought Etienne could have surgery and potentially return late in the season, but the Jaguars placed him on injured reserve on Tuesday, which means he will not be allowed to return this year.

Stranded in the White House

The Biden administration says it does not know how many U.S. citizens are in Afghanistan hoping to leave in the face of the American withdrawal and Taliban takeover. For days, Pentagon officials said they had no ability to venture outside the Kabul airport to find those Americans and bring them to safety.

Dogs building off scrimmage with Barbe

The Jennings Bulldogs had their annual scrimmage with the powerful Barbe Buccaneers last Thursday in Lake Charles, and after a rough start against the potent hosts’ offense, the Dogs settled in and showed glimpses of what could be in 2021. Playing without a few injured Bulldogs in the contest, and having a ton of newcomers who missed all of junior varsity football in 2020 due to Covid-19, Jennings Head Coach Rusty Phelps was pleased with what he saw.
