PRZEMYSL, Poland (AP) — All day long, the trains and buses taking people from Ukraine to the safety of Polish border towns are carrying large numbers of citizens of other countries whose lives have been upended along with those of Ukrainians fleeing a homeland under attack.

New Orleans hosts its first full-dress Mardi Gras since 2020

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Revelers decked out in traditional purple, green and gold came out to party on Fat Tuesday in New Orleans’ first full-dress Mardi Gras since 2020. The fun includes back-toback parades across the city and marches through the French Quarter and beyond, with masks against COVID-19 required only in indoor public spaces.

Oil prices surge above $100 a barrel

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil prices soared Tuesday and investors shifted more money into ultra-safe U.S. government bonds as Russia stepped up its war on Ukraine.

Diamond Dogs rally past Iota, 13-7

The Jennings Diamond Dogs got their first win of 2022 at newly named Danny Reed Field Monday night by toppling previously unbeaten Iota by a final of 13-7. Jennings pounded out 12 hits in their comefrom-behind victory over the neighboring Bulldogs, and used a strong relief performance by senior Ethan Jardell to secure the win on a chilly evening. Jennings trailed 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, however reeled off 11 unanswered runs to steal the show in their home opener. The triumph gave first-year head coach Nicholas Duthu his first win, and moved Jennings out to 1-4 on the young season. Iota fell to 4-1 with the loss.

Dogs drop playoff opener to Richwood, 73-63

MONROE — The No. 18 Jennings Bulldogs traveled to play the No. 15 Richwood Rams Friday night in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs. The game was evenly contested for three periods as there were seven ties and 10 lead changes. Jennings led 47-46 in the final minutes of the 3rd period. However, Richwood would steadily pull ahead in the fourth period to take a hard-fought 73-63 win.

SWLA to receive $9.2M in hurricane funds

Jeff Davis Electric Cooperative (JDEC) will receive over $5 million from the federal government for protective measures as a result of Hurricane Laura.

Crash Results in Car Fire

Emergency personnel responded to a wreck Monday on the corner of Plaquemine Street and North Cutting Avenue in Jennings where a car was engulfed in flames. The driver of one vehicle and passenger of another were taken to area hospitals and were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
