VETERAN COP, BUT NEWCOMER TO NEW ORLEANS, GETS CITY COUNCIL OK AS POLICE CHIEF

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans' City Council has approved the appointment of Anne Kirkpatrick as the city's new police chief. Kirkpatrick has served as chief of police in Spokane, Washington, and Oakland, California. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell announced in June that Kirkpatrick was her choice to replace Shaun Ferguson, who retired last year. Kirkpatrick has been serving on an interim basis.

POLICE BALL

1940 -Chief of Police A. H. Dudley has announce that a Police Ball will be given at the American Legion Hut on Friday night November 22, 1940.

An advance ticket sale is to be held for the purpose of paying expenses. Everyone is invited to attend and help make the ball a success. A popular orchestra is to be announced later. It is hoped that affair will be the most successful event of the seasonal;

HISTORY, PARISH GOVERNMENT

1940- Jeff Davis Parish was created in 1912 by dividing Imperial Calcasieu Parish into four parts, Jeff Davis being one of the parts. The parish was settled by a large number of people from Mid-Western States of Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee, Kentucky and others. In addition to this, French settlers from the eastern part of Louisiana moved westward and settled along the streams of the Parish.

Jennings, the county seat, is one of the oldest towns in the Parish.

80th Anniversary of the Pony Express Issue

1940- A 3-cent red brown stamp issued on April 3, 1940, commemorated the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Pony Express, a horse and rider mail delivery system. It was created as an alternative to the Butterfield Overland Stage Line, which followed a southerly route westward from Missouri. Concerns that this service would become unavailable should armed hostilities erupt between North and South prompted the alternative.

TRAFFIC OPEN ALL THE WAY ON CUTTING

1940 - Traffic was allowed over the new $100,000 Cutting Avenue pavement today, the last barrier being moved last night at the intersection at First Street, and motorists henceforth could drive the mile and tenth length from the oil field road on the north to where the avenue meets the Old Spanish Trail.

Zigler Motors

1940- In the short space of time since the sale as Zigler Motors, Inc. they have sold new and used cars, and among them 43 used cars delivered to customers, they have sold late model cars prices at $965. Only five of their trade-ins remain unsold. This fresh stock has been coming through their reconditioning department and placed in the sale allowing the customer to use the coupon, valued at $25 when a trade-in is involved, W. C. Bangle manger, reported.
