The last of this year’s persimmon harvest are ripening. According to an old wives tale, the upcoming winter weather can be predicted by splitting open a permission seed. The shape inside should resemble a fork, spoon or knife. If there is a fork shape, the area can expect a mild winter; a spoon signifies a lot of snow; and those whose seed reveals a knife can expect a cold winter that “cuts like a knife”. Needless to say, this local persimmon tree is predicting a mild winter. Let us know if your seeds tell a different story.

LAKE ARTHUR — The Lake Arthur Tigers closed out their regular season strong Friday night by blasting the Vinton Lions by a final score of 50-6 at Jack Doland Stadium. Lake Arthur would score their 50 points in the first half of football and coast to the easy 44-point win. The win ends the Tigers’ regular season at 6-4, and garnered them a No. 19 seed in the Division IV non-select playoffs where they are matched up with No. 14 Montgomery in the opening round.
